18. DK is a fine American.....but.........
..we're ALL missing the big picture. John Edwards is the candidate who has been so successful because his campaign has been able to pull independents out to the polls. He jumped from 2% to 15% in NH b/c of this. He jumped from 12% to 30% in Missori because of this.

Look everyone: It's great for unity among hard-core Dem's that folks are falling in line behind Kerry. There are others, such as DK, who I REALLY DO ADMIRE. But last time I checked, Al Gore carried virtually NO States among NC, SC, FL, and the ENTIRE mid-west. We need a frsh, positive voice as our candidate. Face it, he's much sharper & presidential "looking" than JK. Petty, though it is, that's how many people (I've spoken to them in many States) decide to vote.

Now I'm not by any means suggesting that the well-informed folks who frequent DU are shallow like this, but we need to stand behind someone, John Edwards specifically, who will be able to bring undecideds, repub's, and simply MORE democrats from around our heartland, OUT TO THE POLLS for us. If they're the slightest bit opposed to GW, or are hard-core ABB, they'll have very little qualms about supporting Edwards for President.

I have been volunteering for his campaign when I'm not in the classroom teaching my 5th/6th graders, and THIS is the message I've gotten.

Much of the Kerry phenomenon is media hype+plus+people not wanting their vote to go for not, by pulling the lever for someone else.

We need Edwards. we need to win States that Gore couldn't win--NOT just focus on the hoop-la of how well JK has done in States where DEM's already have the edge.

33. Actually many Republicans hate these free trade agreements
He has massive appeal for them.

It's so popular with rightwingers in Texas it's a plank in the Republican Party Platform!

http://www.rlctx.org/RLCTX/Texas%20Republican%20Party%20Platform%202000.htm

International Trade – The Party favors fair and reciprocal trade in the international market place for our agricultural products, oil and gas, any other raw materials and manufactured goods. We urge the use of import quotas of foreign products like those used by former President Ronald Reagan to protect the Harley–Davidson motorcycle, steel and machine tools and computer chip industries from “dumping” by foreign powers. Likewise, we urge sanctions against the European Union and other nations that disrupt free trade by subsidizing agricultural exports or other goods to the United States. We support business opportunity and oppose President Clinton’s advocacy of intrusive government–industry partnerships based on Japanese and European models. We urge the repeal of NAFTA and GATT and withdrawal from membership in the WTO. We believe that we should call for the immediate withdrawal of the United States from any agreements that compromise national sovereignty, independence, self-sufficiency and national security.

Sounds like Dennis is ready to make another 'giant sucking sound' as all the old GOP party faithful leave bush to vote for Dennis!

66. I suppose polls would be at the top all day then, wouldn't they
I like this poll, though, and I think it's pretty timely.

There are a lot of things to like about Dennis (or not, for some), but it's pretty much all about the ideology, as far as I can tell.

For me, his positions put him really head-and-shoulders up above any other Democrat in the race - that, and his integrity.

I just had this thought come to mind -

What if Dennis Kucinich taught "Compassion School" and George Bush was forced to attend by court order after being driven out of Al Gore's house this fall?

I love that thought.

Get here any way you can.

74. Um
Dennis Kucinich vanquished a Republican in a congressional district that is dominated by Democrats. He won re-election in 2002 with over 70% of the vote. The Republican that he beat was out of place in that district, so it is really not that big of a feat.

I personally think it is much more impressive that Edwards knocked off Faircloth in a very Republican state, or that Kerry was able to hold off William Weld. Weld was a Republican in arguably the most Democratic state in the country, and he was able to win re-election with 70%+ of the vote.

I think that both of these events were much more convincing than Dennis knocking off a Republican in a Democratic-dominated congressional district.

77. Kucinich beat Sinagra in the middle of the "Gingrich Revolution"
Most seats were going the other way in 1994, when Kucinich ousted incumbent Republican Tony Sinagra, despite being outspent two-to-one.

In 1994, Kucinich challenged Republican Ohio State Sen. Anthony Sinagra for his 23rd district seat. The district was composed of Cleveland neighborhoods which had historically responded positively to Kucinich’s blend of progressive populism and the election quickly became a lively and spirited race, with Kucinich leveraging the strength of the expansion of the city's publicly-owned light system which he had protected from privatization, and which even today provides low-cost power to almost half the residents of Cleveland. Although he was outspent by his Republican rival 2 to 1, Kucinich emerged as the victor.

In January 1996 he entered the Democratic primary for Ohio’s 10th District seat in the House of Representatives. Thanks to his experience as mayor and recent victory over Sinagra, Kucinich had significant name-recognition among voters, and went on to challenge Republican Rep. Martin Hoke in the general election. Kucinich relied on a grassroots campaign with ties to lower- and middle-class communities in his campaign against the two-term representative. He received decisive support from environmental groups and labor unions, including the AFL-CIO, which poured more than $1million into ads against his opponent.

In 1998 the Cleveland City Council honored him for, "having the courage and foresight to refuse to sell the city's municipal electric system." Kucinich was right then, and he's right now. That's why he beats Republicans.

And Kucinich has never wavered in aggressively championing for the “little guy.” In his first term in the U.S. Congress, he emerged as a vocal critic of NAFTA. He has also opposed cuts in Social Security and healthcare and advocated for a patients bill of rights that would allow all patients their choice of doctors and specialists. Today, as chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (the largest congressional caucus), Kucinich has promoted a national health care system, preservation of Social Security, increased Unemployment Insurance benefits, and the establishment of wholesales cost-based rates for electricity, natural gas and home heating oil. When the Supreme Court ruled that mandatory arbitration could be a condition of employment, Kucinich introduced a bill to reverse the Court's decision.

Kucinich has been re-elected with increasing margins each time, and now pulls in 74% of the vote in his district. Kucinich opposes the death penalty, NAFTA, and the WTO, and champions single-payer universal health coverage, and empowering family farmers in moving into energy and food distribution.

People who try to discredit Kucinich's dramatic wins over incumbent Republicans by trying to credit the liberal nature of his district are missing the point.

Dennis wins because he's truly the soul of the progressive movement today. His wins over incumbent Republicans are proof of the depth of inspiration he fires up in others.

79. Kerry / Kucinich in '04
Hey DU doods,

John Kerry is the big guy who can take the Presidency from Bush and his goons. Dennis Kucinich would be (in my mind, but I'm Australian, and can't guarantee that this would sit well with Americans) his ideal V.P.

But first, you've got to make sure that everyone votes, and that the process is honest. Good luck.

88. One thing's for sure - you wouldn't have Nader in if you had Kucinich in
But the media and the "I wanna vote just like everybody else is voting" non-critical thinkers push a candidate on us that will guarantee that the fight is for the barely 5 million voters who wanted Gore to be more conservative.

The Democrats ignore their base, and continue to stretch toward the right, and then they wonder why the progressives continue to seek someone who will speak for them.

Duh.

89. I love this teeth-gnashing over Nader
Because I know that we wouldn't even have to worry about Nader if we had Dennis as the nominee.

The Democrats are making the choice that it's more "electable" to try to steal votes from conservatives in the middle than it is to lock up Nader's votes in the bank and preach to the core with clear, progressive Democratic values.

As long as Dennis is in the race, someone will be speaking to the issues that the others would rather avoid.

Dennis speaks for all of us.

97. Good point.
You point out the futility, the inherent contradiction, and the divorce from reality that the "electability" sham embraces. Didn't Clark drop out because of his evaluation of his own "electability?"

Dennis is electable. The evidence is right in front of us: he has been elected.

I valued general Clark's presence in the contest, and was sorry to see him go. What are his plan for the future? Will he run for other office?

98. Having won exactly one election in his entire life?
If that is the criteria, or part of the criteria, then Dennis Kucinich is electable in spades.

He's beaten three separate incumbent Republicans, one during the "Gingrich Revolution" when most seats were going the other way.

He represents a real difference from Bush.

How many people are going to stay home in November, rather than choosing between:

Two candidates who support the death penalty.

Two candidates who support NAFTA.

Two candidates who support invading Iraq.

Two candidates who are against universal single-payer health care.

Two candidates who are against gay marriages.

I'll give you a clue - plenty.

No difference = No win

102. The REAL swing-vote issues are NAFTA and health care
Ask yourself how Kerry and Edwards differ from the standard, corporate enabling position of the major parties.

The people want to be secure in their bodies and in their jobs. When they are, they want to be better public citizens and participate in the agenda of the nation.

Looking for evidence that this is true?

Read anything about Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs."

http://web.utk.edu/~gwynne/maslow.HTM
http://chiron.valdosta.edu/whuitt/col/regsys/maslow.html
http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/maslow.html

And on and on and on....

Why is Bush so focused on keeping people un-insured and un-employed?

Because they then have no desire nor inclination to pay attention to his rape of the land, the government, and the Treasury for his rich, corporate friends.

Do you think Kerry will take on the corporations? Do you think Kerry will take on NAFTA? Do you think Kerry will fight for universal single-payer health care for LESS than what we're paying now?

Yeah, right.
