3. And Global is a rather right-leaning outlet.
People are slowly but surely realizing that something needs to be done.

4. They don't care. They just want to win the next election and realized
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 11:34 AM by applegrove
after Dion was elected that the environment is a top issue in Canada. Now they have to convince their base to care. So they can win a majority. Which they will not win. Because the neocons in Canada are known for their lying and myth-making ways. They are also known for ripping up the Kyoto accord Canada did sign. The Conservatives just realized they were totally out of touch with Canadians and won the last election, with a minority, based mostly on how sick Canadians were of a scandal the Liberals were involved with. Simply put... the environment is now the biggest wedge issue and all the neocons in the country scramble to put themselves on the winning side of the issue. Harper put a neophyte environment minister in place and didn't allow her to talk publicly at first. Show how important that issues was to them until the Liberal Leadership Convention. Now he fires her (after controlling her completely..so really he should fire his own ass) and put some loud-mouth in her place. They are running around in circles and making deals with the NDP like crazy to try and erase their previous actions.

6. I'm not saying that Harper is doing anything about it
I'm just pointing out that there is a growing public awareness in North America that climate change is a serious problem and something needs to be done. I certainly hope that Dion will actually do something about it, unlike his predecessors Harper and Martin. The cynic inside me says that the Liberals will regain power, hang onto it for a dozen years, then just as they're getting ready to do something about global warming, the public will have had enough of them and put the Tories back in. (i.e. the same shit that happened with the child care plan.)

But I really hope that Canada won't tolerate the Liberal Party's tendency to dick around and not do anything. Once Dion becomes Prime Minister after the next election, he'll have to take action or support will bleed to the NDP and perhaps the Greens. I think he knows this, and we'll probably see positive change.

7. I was just adding to your comment that Global is right wing outlet and if
it is talking environment then so is the NP and all the other outlets that are directed at the conservative base. They don't mean it. The only thing that changed was the importance of the environment to Canadians. So now they put up a smoke screen to try to get that majority they so desperately want.

8. They surely aren't poised to get the majority are they?
Aren't they running negative ads against Dion during the Super Bowl?

Going negative before an election is even called is surely a sign of desperation and weakness.

9. We can only hope not. I don't think they are likely to get a majority. But Canadians
elected them as a minority..so how smart can Canadians be? I think the Liberals will win a majority in this next election. But that will not stop the cons from trying to pull the wool over people's eyes.

5. Here is what the cons say today:
http://www.thestar.com/article/177916

"You can't just snap your fingers and reduce emissions by one-third, reduce Canadians' energy use by one-third, in the space of a couple of years," he said. "We have to talk about facts, not about fantasy."
