Another media made storm against Obama
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 10:43 AM by Mass
This week-end, Obama was talking about how the media focused on what is not important. It seems that they are intent to prove him right.

Craig Crawford’s Trail Mix: Obama’s Opening Gaffe
By Craig Crawford | 9:57 AM; Feb. 13, 2007 | Email This Article

If Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, John Kerry or Joe Biden had said that American lives lost in Iraq were “wasted,” a media firestorm would have erupted.

And yet there was Sen. Barack Obama, just 24 hours after his presidential campaign announcement over the weekend, saying the nation had “seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.”

Immediately following his off-the-cuff remark during an Iowa town hall meeting — and after huddling with horrified aides — the Illinois Democrat told the Des Moines Register that he regretted his choice of words, and wished he had instead said “their sacrifices are never wasted.”

Despite the mea culpa, Obama’s gaffe caused no break in the media gushing over his budding candidacy. But if he does win the nomination, expect Republicans to play that tape over and over, arguing that it shows a lack of respect for soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

This was also on the Today Show this morning, and on politico.com. And, frankly, why do the media not focus on who is responsible for these loss.

1. So what will it gain Obama's rivals to claim the lives gained something?
What have these lives tangibly gained? I know they died for something. I don't know that the something that they died for was actually obtained. Or are we on the troop death installment plan here?

...

That's an unintentionally apt metaphor I think.

2. So what is the "noble cause"? Isn't that Cindy Sheehan's question?
I don't think we have heard an answer yet.

3. I actually think that his original statement
was correct! WHy do we have to be political correct about this? The fact that the troops are doing their duty does not mean that their lives were not wasted, needless deaths, and many waste lives that will return from this scarred physically and/or emotionally for life. Obama was right IMHO, and probably saying what he actually thinks, too bad that he had to spin it later.

4. Me too, but the media insist he was against the troops.
Meriedith Vierra said that this morning, after showing him explaining what he meant in a townhall meeting in NH, and now this.

5. Spin it against Bush
It would have been refreshing if Obama had turned this against Bush and his supporters that the soldiers were just doing their duty in a war that this country is now against that Bush started and why their lives were wasted.

Again a Dem won't stand up and fight for something.

8. The wingnuts are already circulating video.

The wingnut MM, and she's citing the NYT. This is why it's never good to play the wingnut's game. Kerry was right to slam them, and should never have been forced to apologize (by Dem pile-on) for hurt feelings. He was right to stick to his criticism of Bush.

10. A 20 year old Marine who was an Iraq casualty from my town
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 11:28 AM by LibDemAlways
was buried last week. The article in the paper quoted his family as saying he joined the Marines right out of high school in 2005 because he wanted to "go to Iraq and find those responsible for 9/11."

That young man was lied to. His parents were lied to. They made the mistake of trusting their government and now their son is dead and for what? Halliburton profits? Oil? The Project for a New American Century?

20 year olds should be in college, or learning a trade, or figuring out what they want to do with their lives. They should not be occupying a grave courtesy of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Obama was right. That is a horrible, monumental, criminal waste of a life.
