Poll question: A primary poll to make everyone happy |
|
We keep seeing polls that people are unhappy with because one candidate or another is not represented (usually because that candidate has either not declared or stated that they will not run this time) so here is one with all the possible Democratic candidates listed. Let me know if I forgot anyone.
There are only ten spots so I filled it up including those most often lamented left off.

and Al Gore are not officially running but demand for them to be on a poll is overwhelming here. Evan Bayh was listed on a site I went to as a top 10 candidate.
My polls have a correct/incorrect rating of + or - one candidate.

If he runs he has my support. He has experience, vision and the advantage of having been right on the war from the beginning.
If he doesn't run, I'm looking at Obama, Richardson, Clark & maybe Vilsack. All of these guys have things I don't particularly like. Obama was right on the war and is a great speaker but lacks experience. Richardson and Vilsack are successful governors with Richardson also having a great deal of successful foreign policy experience but both suported the war early on. Fortunately neither has to defend a vote. Clark has the foreign policy experience and military credibility but I haven't seen anything which shows that he can do well in elective office.
I like a great deal of what Edwards is saying but watching him tie himself in knots on Meet the Press, makes me think that we need someone who did not vote for the war before he voted against it. For that reason I am also not thrilled with Biden, Dodd and of course Clinton.

33. Gore/Obama would truly be unstoppable |
|
Even Diebold couldn't steal '08 with a Gore/Obama ticket. The margin would be WAY too large.
My ranking is similar to everyone else's. After Gore, there's sort of a three-way tie between Edwards, Clark and Richardson (all with their pros and cons roughly balancing out in my mind).
And as we all know, Hillary getting the nomination would guarantee another Republican president.

23. At this point, Richardson |
|
The more I learn about him, the more impressed I am. He has an impressive political resume, and is the Governor of a Southwestern state. He's probably not as far left as I would like, but that would probably tend to make him more electable.
I'm a longtime Edwards supporter, but I've soured on him as of late, for a lot of reasons. Clark's never held elected office, Obama will be tagged "inexperienced", Hillary will bring Bill's penis back into the White House (plus, we get all the grief of having a democrat tagged as a "liberal" in the White House, without actually getting a liberal), Gore had his shot and blew it by caving to the SCOTUS act of judicial fiat, Kucinich is a member of the House (a body that has sent zero people to the White House in the modern era), Vilsack has a very unfortunate name (it has "sack" in it), Mike Gravel's been out of office waaay too long, Biden & Dodd are both Senators (see comment in re Kucinich), and Al Sharpton's never held elected office, despite running five times.
Not that there are not lots of reasons to like many of the folks above, all are fine democrats with admirable records of public service. At this moment, though, my strategic side says Richardson (the other side of my brain never gets what it really wants anyway).

27. I still don't get the Gore obsession |
|
Good man screwed out of the Presidency. I'll give him that. But a few things. First, as of now he is not running. Second, he should have walked away with the Presidency in 2000. It shouldn't have even be close. How the hell did he lose those debates? Third, wouldn't it make more sense for him to concentrate on Global Warming? If he enters the campaign, his message on the issue will be politicized. If Global Warming is the issue of our lifetime and future generations, then we must let Gore continue doing his work without people viewing him through a political lense. And additionally, if your a person who is obsessed with the "experience factor," Gov. Richardson takes the cake.

They can be a good way to gauge the opinion of certain self-selected samples. For example, I bet DU polls are a good way to judge the opinion of Democratic activists in general, something candidates/potential candidates will want to know at this point.

And an honorable mention for Richardson...good to see he's moving up in the rankings. He deserves more attention.

While he isn't my first choice, I'd pick him before any of the anointed "serious," "major," etc. candidates. I might pick him in a DU poll just because he isn't getting any love, lol.

Edited to add: I fully support Wes Clark for Secretary of Defense (normally he would have to wait until May 2010 but if Congress agrees he could start serving in January 2009). Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot: Read Rolling Stone magazine: WHY GORE SHOULD RUN -- AND HOW HE CAN WINhttp://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/13248532/why_gore_should_run__and_how_he_can_winGet ready for Al Gore's next book - The Assault on Reason - out in May! http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/16/AR2006091600877.htmlVisit the following websites:www.algore.com www.algore.org www.draftgore.com - Sign the petition! :) :kick:
