Predict the Republican and Democratic Tickets in '08!
This is a total crap-shoot, because there are plenty of plausible tickets. I'll go out on a limb and propose...

Republicans
Giuliani // Barbour

Democrats
Obama // Warner

To clarify, Barbour is Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi and former RNC Chairman. Warner, of course, is former Virginia Governor Mark Warner. In all honesty, I don't know how likely a candidate he is, considering that he's reportedly eying John Warner's Senate seat in '08 and if he runs for that he obviously wouldn't run for Vice President.

It'll end up being Giulliani/McCain versus Obama/Richardson although you could insert Hillary in either spot there.

That said, if Gore declares, all bets are off.

The Primaries are very hard though because you don't have the whole Party's money behind you for your message -- you have to raise your own and HRC just has too much damn money.

Edwards/Richardson

Something tells me Edwarrds is gonna come out on top. He'll bring Richardson on board because he's a) Latino, 2) experienced, 3) popular in New Mexico, and 4) from a swing state.

McCain/Brownback

This is how McCain will shore up the conservative vote.

13. Okay
Of course, it's way too early.

But I'd pick Obama/Warner for the Dems. Obama appears to have the fundraising potential to take on Clinton. He'll try to pick up the electoral votes of Virginia with Warner on the ticket.

I actually like Romney/Barbour to win the GOP nomination. Romney will pick Barbour to try and win the Southern vote. McCain and Giuliani aren't popular enough to win the conservative base. Romney is an acceptable compromise.

Right now he is ahead in Iowa, and polls have been posted on this board that show he has the best chance of announced Dems for beating Rudy. He has formulated national health care plans, programs to eliminate poverty, and plans to get out of Iraq. He is attractive and crowds love him.

Now as to whether he would accept VP, I don't know, but he might with Gore because they would win.

19. Warner is great, but damaged goods. The skinny was he had skirt issues.
If anyone but Obama gets the nomination, he's gonna be the VP candidate just for the asking. Not a bad move since his career prospects depend almost entirely on getting the hell out of the Senate as soon as possible. At age 46, he can probably afford to pine away for 8 to 12 years before trying again. So the only Democratic question is, who would Barack pick?

I think he needs to beef down his ticket a lot with some security/foreign policy talent. That means Richardson, Clark, or (and this will kill us Clarkies) Republican exClinton DoD Secretary William Cohen. Of course that's an all Northern ticket, which history says is real dumb politically. I do have to wonder if exSenator Sam Nunn is still young enough to serve (Wiki says he'll be 70 next year).

23. Seriously, where on earth have you heard skirt issues?
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 12:44 AM by liberalpragmatist
I've read an awful lot on Warner and people still seem pretty sold on him. The party's practically begging him to run for the Senate in '08 (which would of course preclude him from running for VP) and he seems interested in another run. Most accounts had that he genuinely wanted to spend more time with his family right now then spend 2 years running for president.

The one I've heard "skirt" issues about was Richardson, but even those rumors seem pretty unsubstantiated; what people can piece together is that he's very flirty with women but there's no evidence of any affairs.

I agree that Richardson and Clark would be strong possibilities for Obama. I've promoted an Obama/Richardson ticket before and been enthusiastic at times, but I wonder how risky it would be to put two racial minorities on the Dem ticket?

I don't really see Bill Cohen on the ticket. But I do see several other possibilities. Former UN ambassador Richard Holbrooke's a possibility, though. Tom Vilsack, Evan Bayh (although probably not with Obama - Obama himself is Midwestern enough and Bayh, though popular, wouldn't carry Indiana), Kathleen Sebelius (KS governor), Dick Durbin (if the nominee ISN'T Obama), Chris Dodd (could be a good backup for Edwards), even Tom Daschle for Obama (not incredibly likely but not impossible; Daschle has endorsed Obama and much of his staff works for Obama; if the stench of "loser" isn't too much, Obama could view him as a good elder-statesman figure to reassure voters anxious about his inexperience). And some dark-horses, like Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico and Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota (though we'd lose that ND senate seat to a Republican appointee).

According to RadarOnline...

Mark Warner's Clinton Problem

Is Mark Warner trying to skirt a bimbo eruption?

The former Virginia governor has decided not to run for president in 2008, saying he doesn't want to spend precious moments away from his wife and three daughters.

"This is the right time for me ... to have a life for a little while," said Warner, considered to be the only Democrat with any chance of taking on Hillary Clinton. But the man the New York Times declared in March to be "The Anti-Hillary" might actually have a lot in common with her husband.

D.C. insiders are speculating that his surprise pull-out may have been sparked by concerns that alleged past sexual indiscretions could derail his campaign—especially in the midst of the Mark Foley feeding frenzy.

"I can't believe no one has mentioned his philandering," a former political aide tells Radar, adding that she herself was subjected to Warner's advances in the late '90s and had heard "stories about Mark and many interns."

My alternate theory is that Warner actually will be elected president next year and prove to be a wise and just leader for the next eight years, but that the Time Lords of the 27th Century will be forced to return to our time and prevent him from ever running just to prevent the violent mutilation of future currency and spontaneous tourist riots that erupt at Mt Rushmore every time people view our 44th president's supernaturally ugly mug.

(on edit) About Richardson, I don't think he had a skirt problem so much as a grope problem. The highest source of the complaints was his his own Lt Gov, who subsequently backtracked and said it was just her own personal dislike for huggy people. Really, who knew there'd be such traditional Episcopalians in New Mexico? Sadly, the rumors were not limited to this one complaint, but are vague enough that we probably won't ever hear about them until he's nominated. Then we won't be able to avoid them.

Too bad. I really like Richardson and his wife. They remind me of...

I dunno, I can't quite put my finger on it...

20. Honestly, I don't think I can predict the Dem ticket ...
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 12:53 AM by NanceGreggs
... at this point.

But I'm pretty sure about the Republican ticket: It will be Ogilvy/MacDougall.

I know those aren't household names just yet, but they will be.

James Ogilvy is an orthodontist from Falls River, Massachusettes; Franklin "Skip" MacDougall is a retired taxidermist now living in Phoenix, Arizona.

Neither men have any political experience whatsoever - but by this time next year, they will be the only two registered Republicans not under investigation for fraud, corruption, bribe-taking, vote-tampering, violation of SEC rules, etc...

EDITED TO UPDATE: CNN BREAKING NEWS: Predicted presidential hopeful James Ogilvy has just been indicted on charges of praticing without a license, embezzlement, tax evasion, and extortion. "It ain't over til it's over," said an RNC spokesperson. "We're still confident we'll find the perfect candidate ... or perhaps continue with the Ogilvy campaign, if he makes bail."

28. I don't
I figure that Giuliani or Romney would HAVE to nominate a conservative Southerner.

McCain might have to as well, but he seems likely to pick Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota if he's the nominee. He might be able to get away with it; I don't think either Giuliani or Romney could.

So I expect that several Southern governors will be considered. Besides Haley Barbour, Bob Riley (Ala.), Mike Huckabee (Ark.), and maybe even Jeb Bush (though it's unlikely). Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee would probably be too old (64) for the second spot, though he is considering a run for the top spot (and he'd be formidable).

35. The 'buzz' about GW Bush was always 'he's electable' in GOP circles pre '00
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 12:29 PM by EVDebs
So look at this crop of GOP candidates and ask 'who's electable ?' The general population KNOWS they all walk in goose-step and support for Bush's current policies is the kool-aid test. Who's trying to distance themselves from der Fuerer ? Hegal but he'll be eaten alive by the swiftys ... 'Rebel in chief' McCain ? That's hysterically funny given his Iraq asskissing . Even Colin Powell, remember the Powell Doctrine ?

"Essentially, the Doctrine expresses that military action should be used only as a last resort and only if there is a clear risk to national security by the intended target; the force, when used, should be overwhelming and disproportionate to the force used by the enemy; there must be strong support for the campaign by the general public; and there must be a clear exit strategy from the conflict in which the military is engaged."

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/teachers/lessonplans/iraq/powelldoctrine_short.html

The R's have collectively gone off the cliff. None are 'electable' so even if they have to go with two NE 'liberals' they will do what they have to do. Let's poor them a nice warm tub to soak themselves in...like the Romans used to do.

Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 01:00 PM by Joe Bacon
Nobody will have a majority of delegates in either convention. I fully expect the GOP to draft Jeb Bush and his best VP pick may be George Voinovich to try and hold Ohio. As for the Democrats, I really feel the same scenario will work out and Al Gore will be drafted, My gut instinct tells me his best VP pick would be either Obama, Kansas Gov Sebeilus or Richardson.

Democrat: Hillary // Richardson

If Obama passes Hillary I'm not so certain about a prediction for his VP--Richardson will probably still be the VP pick

I am not convinced of the republican vp but I am very concerned about Romney

Richardson in my opinion is not really expecting to get far in the primaries. I am pretty sure he is just running for the VP slot.

49. Obama/Warner vs. Guiliani/Jeb
The GOP would be nuts to leave Jeb off the ticket in '08. I know the conventional wisdom is otherwise, but that's the same conventional wisdom that dismissed Giuliani's chances a few months ago. If you put Jeb on the ticket, that all but wraps up Florida. The rest of the country won't have any trouble distinguishing Jeb from his brother, especially since Jeb comes across as much more competent in speeches and public appearances.

More than six months ago I mentioned I took 10/1 on Guiliani winning the GOP nomination. There were dismissive remarks at the time but they have somehow diminished. I post on several balanced sites and the right wing posters love Rudy. That's what I noticed beginning almost a year ago and it has only gotten more distinct. Thompson would be very formidable but otherwise I can't see anyone denying Rudy the nod.

I hope it's Obama or Edwards above Hillary, simply for electability purposes. Warner makes by far the most sense for VP, since adding Virginia dramatically changes the electoral college national dynamic and I don't think we can win Virginia in 2008 without Warner on the ticket.

50. Republican: Romney/Huckabee Democratic: Clinton/Warner
The Republican was fairly easy: Which candidate seems the most bereft of principles, ethics or intellect? While Rudy comes close, the clear winner in this category is: TaDa! Mitt Romney.

For vice president, Mittens is going to have to kiss fundamentalist behind without scaring the hell out of centrist voters so I'm thinking guitar picking, soft spoken, Evangelical preacher Mike Huckabee would be a good choice.

As for the Democrats, although she's my last choice, I think Clinton will probably pull it out unless Al Gore enters the race or Bill Richardson somehow catches fire. Her running mate will be a white male. He will have to be centrist who does not raise the hackles of the liberal blogosphere and at the same time help her in the south. Mark Warner does both.

51. Gore // McDermott, Dems and Romney// Gingrich, Reps
Well, if I can dream of Gore I can dream of my fave local Jim McDermott too can't I? Ah Hell, then Gore//Conyers...happy now?

Guiliani, may be revealed to be much less than competent at one of his most important strengths: Homeland Security. Shouldn't a mayor be able to look into the history of his own city and realize that there are those out there who vowed to bring down the WTC? He knew the attempt had happened unsuccessfully once before, he knew those guys might try again and yet he put his security offices where? (Yep in the WTC... well that's what Bill Mahar just said in an interview on Larry King) So what exactly else has the man actually done for Homeland Security...

I discount his poll numbers of today knowing that his record will actually catch up with him when things start getting serious closer to election time.... as a matter of fact, I look forward to seeing all the skeletons which get shaken out by the republican party's closet as they busily out each other in the run-up to this next election. Already we see Romney as an abortion flip flopper and Gingrich has his issues with the ladies... I can't wait to see what falls out of Tancredo's closet! (That one's gonna be :scared: indeed)

Two experienced well rounded (not necessarily a comment on either man's er girth but if you want a ticket that looks like America, a couple of middle aged guys who could stand to lose a few pounds would fill the bill) leaders. Both are strong proponents for Global Warming.

A serious ticket for serious times.
