My first exposure to DU....
Several years ago I was active on a different forum and I spent alot of time debating the elections in 2004.

I used a separte website that was a compilation on ALL the news about the elections as a resource.

One day this guy starts posting all this gibberish curses about some website called DU. Stuff like "Traitor DUers" and "hang all the DUers". Stuff like that. Nothing else. Just threats and curses.

I politely asked him what the hell was the problem and what is DU?

Some one told me about DU and I knew it was for me.

3. Was it a video (DVD) forum?

I had the same thing happen the same year. That was how I learned about the DU.

4. Glad you're here!
I knew it was for me the moment I got here and started looking around. Like chocolate. I can't keep myself away from it.

6. I stumbled across DU...
...shortly after the 2004 election. I don't know how I got here.... other than following links out of pure frustration and/or depression. But I came across the 2004 election thread...and ended up in Washington, DC in January 2005 protesting the Ohio vote count (and I am from South Carolina!) The folks in that original forum were/are just incredible....I knew instantly that I had found a home! :)

7. Same thing happened with me.

Some morans at a fishing site said something like 'well if that's the way you think, you ought to go to DU'. No doubt they meant that in a negative way but I certainly owe them a debt of gratitude.

8. A google search on some GOP idiot brought up "Top 10 Conservative Idiots"
That's how I found it. Read the front page only for about a year. I don't think it ever occurred to me to enter the discussion boards. Duh. Or else I was worried about spending all my time here. In that case, the me that was then was not wrong in that concern.

11. I'm here because I was at a teach-in in Austin Texas
and some guy I'd never heard of got up there and said so many things I resonated with that I bought his book while I was there. Finished the book and then found a reference to DU and decided to check it out. Yep, I came here as a Will Pitt groupie but I stayed to become a well educated activist.

12. I wish I remembered
I became active online quite some time back. First starting with exchristian.net, from there expanding to politics. I remember being at smirkingchimp.com for some time before finding out about/coming to DU. I was an early doubter about the "war on terror." And have hated shrubbie since WELL before the 2000 election (family in TX).

13. I was posting on a newspaper's forum.
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 07:57 AM by The Backlash Cometh
In that forum there was a loyal DUer who would post the Top Ten conservative idiots from time, to time. I was still a staunch independent and didn't want to deal with anyone's propaganda, so I resisted the urge to become a member. But, then finally the debates on the newspaper with the Libertarians became a, "Yes, that's what you are, but what am I" kind of give and take that I realized that they were closed to the world and would never budge so my time on the paper was done.

So what finally drew me to DU? The moving underwear poster. I wanted to know how to create a moving avatar, and before you knew it, I was reading the articles! Must be how they draw readers in Playboy.

15. back in 2001, there was a link to DU from buzzflash about
a DUer who had gotten a visit from the secret service because the poster had referred to bush as captain bunny pants (or something like that). I read awhile and tried to register (but somehow I didn't get it to work at first) - I lurked and tried again to register (and it worked) in the first week of 2002.

I wish I could remember *who* the DUer was who got the visit - and thus the link on buzzflash that introduced me to DU.

17. Walt Starr posted a number of articles
recounting his tracking (Aug. 2004) of wbush wearing military decorations that he had not earned. I don't recall where I saw the articles, but he mentioned DU and the rest is my history.

Sadly, Walt no longer posts here. He was interesting to read.
