Bush Defies Critics, Makes Fox An Ambassador
5:10 PM EDT, April 4, 2007
By DAVID LIGHTMAN, Washington Bureau Chief, The Hartford Courant

WASHINGTON -- President Bush Wednesday defied his Democratic critics and named Sam Fox ambassador to Belgium
-- and fashioned the appointment so that Fox will not need Senate confirmation.

Bush made what's called a "recess appointment," meaning the embattled nominee can serve without confirmation
until the next Congress convenes -- in January 2009, when Bush's term will end. Congress is in recess this week.

It was only a week ago that Democrats were hailing their triumph over Fox, a St. Louis businessman and philanthropist.
Bush had sought Senate confirmation for Fox, a big Republican donor, but was rebuffed when Massachusetts Sen. John
F. Kerry, Bush's 2004 opponent, questioned Fox on his $50,000 contribution to a group of Swift Boat veterans who
tried to discredit Kerry.

snip

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats, took the extraordinary step in
February of testifying on behalf of Fox, praising his civic work and calling him a man who "represents what America
is all about."

Sam Fox????????? I loves the google

1. I think we all knew Shrub would make at least ONE recess appointment
during this LONG Congress break. I have to admit, although I hate the idea that a swift boat supporter is getting ANYTHING, I can't get too excited aboutsomeone who's the Ambassador to Belgum. It could have been a heck of a lot worse...of course the break isn't over yet.

4. No - he was the nice genial guy who would be so much fun to have beer with
- except he supposedly doesn't drink and
- when he drank he was a mean drunk

This was the guy whose staff delayed telling him about New Orleans because they were afraid of how mad he would get.

The MSM knew his reputation from when his dad was President. They knew he branded kids at Yale. They knew and reported as a cute story that he blew up frogs.

Yet they told us Gore was boring and Kerry aloof - when both were incredibly decent, purposeful men with wonderful families which reflected their values. The MSM more than any other part of America is very very quilty.

5. Another example of abuse of power. The framers of the Constitution
NEVER wanted the president to use recess appointments as a means to get around confirmation. Recess appointments are only intended (I believe this is how it was intended) to be used when the office becomes vacated DURING A RECESS. For instance, an official dies during a congressional recess, then the president can make a recess appointment to fill that vacancy until the next congress.

This is another screwed up interpretation of the Constitution. Just like the "president's pleasure" bullshit.
