Democrats’ Plans to Use Iraq as Issue Against Sununu Etched in Granite

New Hampshire Republican John E. Sununu has stuck with President Bush in opposing Democratic-crafted measures calling for U.S. troops to leave Iraq soon. While this conforms to the positions of all but a handful of his Republican colleagues in Congress, few appear to face as much political risk over the issue as Sununu does as he prepares to bid next year for a second term.

Strong antiwar sentiment in New Hampshire last year cost the GOP both of the state’s U.S. House seats and control of both state legislative chambers. And it is clear that Democrats intend to make the unpopular Iraq war a centerpiece of their strategy to oust Sununu.

“Yet again, John Sununu (news, bio, voting record) has voted to support President Bush’s indefinite commitment in Iraq,” said Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand, an announced candidate for the Democratic Senate nomination, after Sununu last week voted against a narrowly passed measure that would provide supplemental funding for the war but set a non-binding deadline of no later than March of next year for withdrawing U.S. troops. “Sununu and Bush continue to fight for more of the same in Iraq.”

Joining in the chorus of Iraq war critics is the Democrats’ other announced Senate hopeful, Katrina Swett. A political and business consultant who made an unsuccessful bid for the 2nd Congressional District seat in 2002, Swett is the daughter of longtime California Democratic Rep. Tom Lantos (news, bio, voting record) and is the wife and business partner of Dick Swett, a former House Democrat from New Hampshire (1991-95) who ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1996.
