Senator Hillary Clinton"The challenge now is to practice poltics as the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible."
The NWPC announces its endorsement of Sen. Hillary Clinton for President. Sharon Ball, NWPC Vice-President for Political Planning and Appointments stated, "We are so excited about Senator Clinton's candidacy. We believe that we are finally about to realize the dream of winning the White House. America is that much closer to fulfilling the vision of equality and democracy that has eluded us for so long."
The unanimous decision to endorse Clinton by NWPC's Board comes on the heels of a Supreme Court decision upholding a ban on late term abortion. Ball expressed confidence that as President, Clinton would veto further restrictions on a woman's right to reproductive choice, and would nominate Supreme Court Justices likely to uphold Roe v. Wade . Ball added that NWPC members in 35 states across the nation are eager to campaign for Clinton and to run as delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
NWPC of New York President Donna Lent called the Clinton endorsement a "watershed moment for women's equality." Lent continued to say, "For the first time since 1920 when women won the right to vote, there is a strong and real possibility that our next chief executive will be a strong, experienced and capable woman. While many women have run before including New York's own Shirley Chisholm, this is the first time a woman candidate has been the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. We believe that Senator Clinton will emerge as the Democratic nominee and that she will go on to win the White House in November 2008."
"It's an honor to be supported by the National Women's Political Caucus," Clinton said. "For decades they have led the fight for women's equality in government and society."http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=1497The National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) is a nationwide multi-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women's participation in the political process by recruiting, training, and supporting women who seek elected and appointed offices.
NWPC was founded in the USA, 1971 by Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, Betty Friedan, Myrlie Evers, congresswomen, heads of national organizations and others who shared the vision of gender equality. They established three bottom line issues: reproductive freedom, affordable childcare, and passage of the Equal Rights Amendment These three issues, coupled with gender parity and diversity at the decision-making table, are the driving principles of the organization. The National Women’s Political Caucus organizes Campaign Workshops across the country to teach the nuts and bolts of running a successful candidacy at all levels of government. The Caucus also offers workshops on political appointments and collaborates with other women’s political organizations to promote good women candidates for gubernatorial and presidential appointments to key posts within the government.
NWPC has local caucuses in communities across the country to help identify candidates, needs and issues specific to their state or county.
