Carol Lam update at TPM
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/003134.php

Looks like we are seeing that the firing decision was coming from the "highest levels of government" and that the firer had no good reason for Carol on why she was canned. She was to be gone in weeks, even though she had important cases (read Republican corruption) to prosecute. The new USA would not overlap (so they could pretend they were unaware of the cases) and that the person would be selected from outside the San Diego office and not subject to the confirmation process.

It's pretty damn obvious that the DoJ was obstructing justice. It's a sad day in our country's history when the criminals are in charge of our Justice Department.

1. And when the media distorts this story to be that the US Attorneys
were removed - no big deal - as they serve at the pleasure of the President

4. Nothing patently illegal, and illegal and convicted is the only standard that counts with respect to
Government officials in this Administration.

Heck, even a conviction barely gets the Media's attention, Libby barely a blip on the media watch of Jon Mark Karr and Anna Nicole infotainment distractions list.

If the Media lowers the threshold enough, maybe they can make the Katrina recovery look competent...nothing patently illegal, ya know.

6. Obstruction of justice is illegal, and convictions have been
obtained before with this kind of evidence.

They kicked her out in the midst of critical prosecutions of Republican targets, while making sure that the interim USA -- her immediate successor -- would be an outsider unfamiliar with the case, appointed outside the usual channels, and whose term wouldn't overlap, so s/he couldn't be briefed on the case.

2. It bothers me to no end that this is THE STORY that everyone
should be covering, or should I say uncovering, like Woodward and Bernstein, yet it has been glossed over as, like was said, no big deal.

This story , if ever gotten to the bottom of will be huge. It is going to eventually be known as the biggest corruption scandal in U.S. history.

And the media? Absent again on this story, like so many other stories.

5. I think the most telling thing was about the "interim US attorney."
That the interim USA would be appointed from outside the office, and that that person's term would not overlap hers.

Just as if they wanted NO ONE to be in charge of the office during a time of critical prosecutions, and as if they wanted to make sure she couldn't brief her successor.

8. I'm just hoping that DoJ, WH & Republican obstruction and stalling on this ...
... only postpone the investigations and prosecutions to timeframes closer to the 2008 election, biting themselves in their collective arses, as in 2006.

9. Well, the criminals are in charge of everything, so why spare DoJ?
In fact, that's an especially GOOD reason to put the foxes in charge of the hen house, I'd say.

10. The Lam grand jury had subpoenaed 3 congressional committees and the CIA
One of the earliest articles on this said that their work product was being turned over to congress. Does anyone know if this is true? Does anyone know what happened to the evidence they had developed?

11. Hadn't heard that, but the place to go for this story is TalkingPontsmemo.com and
the archives at cannonfire.blogspot.com. Joe Cannon did some very illuminating research on Wilkes virtual companies last year...a real eye opener. Also, madcowproducts.com (the guy that covered the terrorist ring in Venice) has done some great reporting on connections between the terrorists and companies (specially Titan Corporation) out in San Diego.

12. Thanks. Good links.
I wish I had kept the article. I think it's important to find out what becomes of the investigation now. It's easy to get distracted, but just firing Lam shouldn't make this go away.
