Bush Did What the Democrats Didn't Have the Backbone to Do
By Chuck Zlatkin
When President George W. Bush vetoed the $124 billion Supplemental Appropriations bill, he did what the Democrats were afraid to do, he voted to de-fund the war in Iraq. At this moment, the bill which included $95 billion to continue the war in Iraq for one more year authored by the Democratic leadership in both the House and the Senate was rejected by President George W. Bush.
After an extended period in which supposed anti-war Democrats rejected the opportunity to stop funding the war in Iraq, the Republican president who started the war vetoed funding for it. Until George W. Bush signs a bill that continues funding this illegal and immoral war, Bush is on the side of those who want to stop the war.
Actions do speak louder than words. We have been inundated with anti-war rhetoric from Nancy Pelosi to Barack Obama, but they rejected introducing Barbara Lee's amendment to stop funding the war, they rejected introducing Jerrold Nadler's "Protect the Troops and Bring Them Home" bill. Either of these bills could have been introduced as amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations Bill which would have forced an end to the war. The bills would have limited spending on the war only to protecting the troops and bringing them home.
The Democratic leadership didn't' want to take this stand. No, they are more interested in non-biding resolutions and suggestions to end the war, but are gung ho to fund the war in Iraq for another year!
Until the Democrats stand up against the war and use their power in the House to de-fund the war they are the Democratic wing of the War Party. And until George W. Bush signs the supplemental appropriations bill to continue the war, he has done more to de-fund the war than any of the pseudo anti-war Democrats who failed the people of the United States by not having the guts to stop funding the war in Iraq.
