Cockfighters rationalize opposition to upcoming Ban
Heard this on the noon New Orleans News today. Louisiana is getting closer to banning cock fighting (the only state where it is still legal.) Those opposing the ban say it shouldn't happen for awhile so participants can sell their animals and find another "career." I swear I'm not making this up.

2. Hey, the cock fighting issue gave Oklahoma a Dem. Governor!!
Edited on Thu May-03-07 01:02 PM by lyonn
It brought out the red-necks, you know, the gun totin bunch and damned if they didn't vote in the process for a Democrat. We chuckled for a long time over that one. Who would have "thunk".

Edit: Knew a few of those "owners" and have been to a cock fight. Really dumb but kinda funny how these people get into the whole business. Having a psych course would help a person understand the mentality of the 'business.' It's gambling pure and simple.

6. Let me recommend a movie...
"Rooster: Spurs of Death."

I went to college at Pittsburg State in the southeast corner of Kansas - good math (my major) school. For a graduation gift in 1995, my friends (who liked watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 like I did) found this movie for sale. It "stars" a guy who has a few things named after him in Pittsburg (Gene Bicknell), whose charitable contributions include bailing out the college football players when they get arrested.

Laughably horrible movie, but it was filmed around the Kansas/Oklahoma area when cockfighting was still legal so it might actually be a valid insight into the world of cockfighting.

I lived in Fayetteville way back in the 60's and 70's and we got the TV station out of Pittsburg.

12. Well, it appeared that all it took was about 5 acres in the country,
$50. to a hundred or so for the 'good' bird, to breed and fight and some spare time. These were beer drinin', fightin', gamblin'part time business people. Most had real jobs of some sort. There were people from all walks of life at those events, from business men, judges, lots of lawyers, wanting some comic relief in their lives.

4. If they want to keep cockfighting legal,
they should have to use their own cocks!

9. "so participants can .... find another 'career'."
I hear the army could use some more people - hell, they're use to bloody, painful mayhem and death. I should think that would be a perfect lateral move for them. :sarcasm:

10. Excellent Idea Sarge
But you are talking about them getting bloody?? Read a scathing LTTE in today's paper telling bush supporters who never served in the military to get to the recruiting station now and take your kids, grandkids, nephews and nieces. It ended with if fighting terrorism is so damned important why aren't you doing it? Not all lunatics in red states.

14. It's not legal here but I could show you a huge farm

that raises only fighting cocks. Each rooster lives in a little pointy hut, like an upside down V. I suppose the huts are subdivided so roosters cannot see each other but I have not investigated! I know what the huts are only because an old friend has the misfortune of living nearby. They were living there before the rooster farm, naturally; no one with normal hearing would deliberately choose such a location.

Being a vet, you may appreciate this, BOSSHOG: my dad was stationed at Subic Bay, P.I., when I was a kid and Filipinos, as you may know, are very big on cockfighting. We lived in the village of Olongapo in a second-floor apartment. The morning after we moved in, we were awakened by the fighting cocks owned by our landlord, who lived on the first floor. As someone said, you can't sneak dawn past a rooster. Let alone two dozen roosters closely confined. I don't recall it bothering me much but it drove my mother nuts, I guess because they didn't stop after dad had gone to work and I'd gone to school. For our next move, my dad made sure there were no fowl neighbors

16. Great Story Teammate
We live in a somewhat rural environment and our neighbor about a half mile down the road has a rooster and it greets the sunrise as well. I enjoy hearing him with a nice cup of coffee in the AM. My parents had a rather vicious rooster who attacked me while I was mowing the lawn. Got me low on the leg. I got the last laugh. He ended up on the dinner table.

15. I've seen cockfighting in Indonesia - it was fun
but kinda scary as well. Hey, what else are bored men going to do? Gambling and watching fights are in our blood.
