Well, I don't want to point any fingers, but some of those folks might be concern trolls, some might be real trolls, and some people just plain like to stir the shit.
The "alert" button is usually your friend, particularly for posters with low post counts who are hyperventilating over these bogus stories.

6. The alert button doesn't help when they're citing a "legitimate" news source... |
|
...that should be regarded more skeptically based on its track record as a corporate media whore.

But I think it's within the bounds of DU rules to point out the contradiction to the "legitimate" news source (both Pelosi's and Reid's offices deny that a withdrawal date will be written out), and ask the person who posted the original link if he or she would like to continue to stand by a story that's now been shown to be erroneous. I think it's also within DU rules to caution a poster about drawing premature conclusions based on one article that cites an anonymous source.
The reply to an answering post like that usually reveals whether the poster is legitimately though naively concerned, or if they're just a concern troll. At which point the alert button again comes into play.

5. The media is the biggest part of the problem. |
|
In fact, the media is the problem. As long as the GOP controls the corporate media, it will continue to be the problem. I think the Democrats boycotting the Fox debates was a step in the right direction. ABC ought to be boycotted as well. Unless someone has a better solution.
I wish people who subscribe to the NY Times and WaPO would subscribe instead to someplace like the Christian Science Monitor. I would much rather see the CSM cited as a source more often around here.

8. What happened to the fucking TRUTH??? |
|
Has it always been this way? I don't remember ever seeing so much spin all the time on everything, everywhere.
Damn. Objective used to be a fair assumption, and now, the only place it seems to exist is NPR. (And even there sometimes I wonder)... AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!! :banghead:

12. I would say that so many fall prey to it because of recent history |

caving in has been part and parcel of the Democratic strategy for some time, now. This article is simply reporting what many on our side fear is a real possibility. Perhaps this was an attempt to make the Democrats signal their next strategy soon by stirring up the base. The blowback from that is that a Democratic party egged on by the base will be more difficult to beat in a staring contest.
Those that fall for this story will not do so for long when they hear the contradiction by the leadership themselves. In fact, such a contradiction backed by action will only serve to alienate the WP further. Another bit of potential blowback.
As for the DUer who posted the original article, I do not hold that DUer to blame and wish for some kind of apology. Reporting what one sees in the papers and discussing it is what DU is all about. We must not emblazon a witch hunt mentality for those that have questions. We are the good guys, after all.
Like it or not, there IS news in the WP. Apparently not all of it is true (big surprise). Who would know the truth if it never was discussed here in the first place and calls starting going out asking questions?
