Edwards Calls For News Networks Except Fox NewsTo Make Debate Footage Available
Edited on Thu May-03-07 07:28 PM by benny05
Senator John Edwards sent the following letter to news networks, asking them to make video footage from the presidential debates that they broadcast available to the public.

May 3, 2007

Mr. Jim Walton – CNN
Mr. Leslie Moonves – CBS
Mr. Jeffrey Zucker – NBC Universal
Ms. Anne Sweeney – Disney-ABC Television Group
Ms. Paula Kerger – PBS
Dr. Howard Dean – DNC

Dear Messrs Walton, Moonves and Zucker, Mses. Sweeney and Kerger, and Dr. Dean:

Selecting a president is the most important responsibility Americans have. In an age of 30-second ads, 7-second sound bites and media consolidation, making an informed decision is harder than ever.

That is why I am asking each news network to make video footage from the presidential debates that they broadcast available on the internet for the public to view and use responsibly. I am also asking Chairman Dean, who is playing a valuable role in organizing many of the Democratic primary debates, to use his influence with the networks to make the debates more broadly available.

K&R - and yes, that's what he's been all about since day one - it is about us, and even his litigation work proved that.

10. Thanks
Edwards' campaign is so much stronger this time. What a little time away from the balderdash of fighting in the Senate can do to clarify positions, even if it means changing of hearts of minds on issues.

I'm more impressed with him this time than in 2004.

11. Agree -- he's quite a more evolved candidate than in 2004, and he
wasn't bad in 2004.

Agree completely.

5. Good for him!
It's great that he wants us to have more information available. He's right of course, the media coverage is so shallow that anything we can get that's at all substantial needs to be easily accessible. He's also being smart, though, because he knows the more information people have, the better he looks.

6. John Edwards is putting it to FOX News like nobody's business.
And he's right.

He's completely right to nail FOX to its own board.

FOX is a propaganda arm for the Republican Party and the Edwards campaign is leading the charge to call it for what it is.

To deny FOX footage of debates lifts from their hands the chance to manipulate events, lifts from their hands the materials the use to weave their red, red outfits.

Thank you, John Edwards, for keeping the heat on FOX and redefining its role for others.

and whoever redJet is, what a talent. Great button.

The more people see the debates on the issues, the more likely he will win.

A quick google shows plenty of debate vid already out there - so... what's his point exactly?

30. Use responsibly
"make video footage from the presidential debates that they broadcast available on the internet for the public to view and use responsibly."

MSNBC is being picky about sharing THEIR debate. It would be helpful to illustrate analysis with clips of the debate without violating MSNBC's ownership. Voters should feel like these debates are theirs, not the networks facilitating the debates.

This is another example of Edwards empowering citizens and attempting to bring them more actively into the process.

28. In reality they both asked on the 3rd, but Obama only sent a letter to Dean.
Edited on Thu May-03-07 11:49 PM by w4rma
Edwards went right to the root and went to the networks.

Much much smarter and shows more dedication to the issue for Edwards to do it properly.

In fact judging from the preparation that Edward put into this, he had probably been planning it for some time and Obama just jumped on the bandwagon with a simple letter to Dean.

Edwards follows the puppy/parrot. Try again. Puppy hasn't exactly backed out of the CBC thing yet, has just been quiet and now cries for Secret Service protection that I am having to pay for, when he should pay for it out of his $25M.

When you can actually prove in a longer post how Edwards follows Obama, that would be great. But I could prove more than 10 times over how Obama hasn't an original idea or plan, and takes after Clinton. Just about half or more of Obama's rhetoric is from Edwards' campaign in 2004, in which actually, Edwards had a good campaign, but now Edwards has come out and decided he didn't need polls, would act with courage in finding out what the American people want. Obama's staff cannot even answer a letter of mine without another event superseding or being so vague on a particular issue. That's why I cannot support him in the primaries. He lacks any substance or won't take stands because he is too cautious--and too new. His supporters blogjack nearly every thread here and the Daily Kos, and I was told by someone who attended the SC debate last week how the Obama supporters were mean spirited and tore up any Edwards signs there were before the Advance team finally got things in order. Sounds like the mean spiritedness I saw in the Myspace debacle too. Obama can't even blog. At least Edwards has great respect for bloggers and allows them to attend press conferences on the phone or in person as CJ's. Edwards also appears on blogs, just as Elizabeth does.
