National AFL-CIO To Consider Hillary Clinton’s Candidacy for President
Urging National AFL-CIO To Consider Hillary Clinton’s Candidacy for President

For Immediate Release: May 3, 2007

The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2½ million union members throughout the state, today announced passage of a resolution urging the National AFL-CIO to “consider Senator Clinton’s extraordinary body of work on behalf of the cause, values and principles of organized labor when deciding labor’s endorsement for President of the United States”.

The National AFL-CIO has jurisdiction for the endorsement of President of the United States.

The following resolution was passed today by the Executive Board of the New York State AFL-CIO:

Hillary Clinton as New York Labor’s “Favorite Sister”

Whereas, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton is one of several candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, and -

Whereas, as a twice endorsed candidate of the New York State AFL-CIO, Senator Clinton has consistently displayed, through countless deeds and actions, a strong commitment to the needs and concerns of working men and women, and -

Whereas, through her seven years as a U.S. Senator, Hillary Clinton has worked on far reaching national legislation that would further the cause of all workers, such as supporting an increase in the minimum wage, co-sponsoring the Employee Free Choice Act and the Family Medical Leave Expansion Act, and opposing CAFTA, and -

Whereas, Senator Clinton has also worked diligently on local labor issues in New York that sometimes fly under the national radar but are vital to the future of local unions and rank and file members, and -

Whereas, Senator Clinton has led the fight on the aforementioned local issues, such as supporting funding for the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Health Care program, calling CEO’s on behalf of numerous local unions to help expedite contract negotiations when the employer had tried to stall talks, expressing support for card-check recognition for local workers who were seeking to form a union, and has made it a priority to be supportive of unions during organizing drives and strikes, and -

Whereas, the New York State AFL-CIO represents one out of every seven union members in the country, thus providing the State Labor Federation with a significant voice concerning candidates worthy of labor’s support, and -

Whereas, male candidates from a home state receiving support from a group or organization are traditionally referred to as a “favorite son”, and -

Whereas, the term “labor brothers and sisters” historically denotes the unity, solidarity and shared sense of purpose amongst union members, as well as their staunchest allies, therefore be it -

Resolved, that the New York State AFL-CIO will consider Senator Clinton as a “favorite sister” of the New York State AFL-CIO, and be it further -

Resolved, that at the appropriate time, the New York State AFL-CIO will urge the National AFL-CIO to consider Senator Clinton’s extraordinary body of work on behalf of the cause, values and principles of organized labor when deciding Labor’s endorsement for President of the United States.

1. Hollywood Springs for Hillary
HILL-YWOOD CASH BASH IN WORKS

By IAN BISHOP

May 1, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton is getting a jump on rival Barack Obama at the box office in their political star-wars saga - with director Steven Spielberg hosting a Hollywood cash bash for Clinton later this month.

Spielberg is teaming with News Corp. President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Chernin and TV producer Haim Saban for a $2,300-per-head fund-raiser at Chernin's Santa Monica home.

Invitations to the May 30 soiree, expected to raise about $700,000, have gone to more than 300 Hollywood movers-and-shakers.

...snip...

Today, Clinton is joining with U2 rocker and global activist Bono to unveil a Senate measure to expand educational opportunities for children in impoverished countries.

Celebrity heavyweights in Clinton's camp include rap producer Timbaland, Elizabeth Taylor, Playboy's Hugh Hefner, comedian Chevy Chase and former model Christie Brinkley.

Clinton Has Wide Lead In NH And SC, Within MOE In Iowa

Tue May 01, 2007 at 13:24:07 PM CDT

Sen. Hillary Clinton has wide leads in both New Hampshire and South Carolina in new polls released today and is within the margin of error in Iowa. Sen. Barack Obama is now in third place in Iowa and New Hampshire and is ahead of Edwards in South Carolina. Sen. John Edwards has moved into second place in New Hampshire.

...Hillary's lead and endorsements have only increased since the debates. While her rivals are quickly falling back-

The mood of the country is trending toward Hillary. She's seen as a strong and viable leader leading us out of this Republican quagmire.

There is no way that 50% of AMerican voters have gathered behind any 2008 candidate.

Leading Californians Endorse Clinton

Hillary to Address California State Convention Tomorrow

Hillary Clinton received the endorsements of two dozen prominent
California officials and community leaders today, on the eve of
California’s Democratic state convention in San Diego.

"I'm endorsing Hillary Clinton for President because I know her and admire her," said California Treasurer Bill Lockyer. "She's been my good friend and our state's great ally for more than a decade. Most importantly, Hillary has been long-time advocate for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, and I know that she will continue her commitment when she becomes President."

Clinton will address the convention at 10:15 a.m. tomorrow at the San Diego Convention Center.

The years of Clintons and my grandmamma wouldn't bother me one bit. Well, except that grandmamma's been dead a long while now.

12. My opinion is based on facts. One fact that she, as a former Wal-mart board member and DLC founder
Edited on Sat May-05-07 12:31 PM by w4rma
pushed and passed free-trade with China, among other places, to the detriment of working Americans and to the huge benefit of Wal-mart. It's no coincidence that Wal-mart made the most gains of every corporation in the world while her husband was President. Every single one. She looked the other way (and most likely helped Wal-mart) as Wal-mart engaged in the most anti-union practices of any business in America.

Sam Walton called Hillary, “My little lady.” Sam paid her an eyebrow raising sum for a director - equal to 60% of her entire not-insubstantial salary as a lawyer. By contrast, Wendy Diaz (her real name), a 13-year-old in Honduras, was paid 25 cents an hour to make shirts for the “little lady’s” label.

On July 2, 1962, in Rogers, Arkansas, Walton opened his first discount store, under the Wal-Mart name. The idea of a discount store is to sell a lower line of goods than a regular department store, but also to sell many of the same goods as regular department stores, at a cheaper price. How would that be possible? It required cost-accounting "savings." The discount store could find some efficiencies of scale, and also operate at a lower profit margin per unit good than a regular department store. But primarily, Walton used two tactics, with regard to labor and suppliers.

First, he resolved to pay his workers less, ferociously resisted any unionization, and restricted most of his workers to working no more than 28 hours per week, which would mean they would not qualify for employee benefits—and would never be able to earn a living wage. He offered some of them health benefits, but most did not earn enough to purchase the health insurance. Though the myth arose that this policy became prevalent only after Walton's April 1992 death, the fact is that Mr. Sam enforced it from day one. Wal-Mart workers earn wage and benefit packages that are 12-30% below those paid to workers in comparable jobs at unionized companies, depending on the job classification. During most of Sam Walton's reign, Wal-Mart had a worker turnover rate of an incredible 35-45%.

Second, Walton instituted a policy that suppliers would have to sell goods to Wal-Mart at constantly lower prices, forcing them to cut expenses, which frequently meant cutting wages of their own workers and/or layoffs. Eventually, this led to these suppliers outsourcing their production to overseas sweatshops, a policy that started to gain steam in the 1980s under Sam Walton's direction.

22. An example of Hillary's corruption and pandering to rightwing extremists
Edited on Sun May-06-07 12:28 AM by IndianaGreen
Example of corruption:

Read an official biography of the Senator and you’ll find her six-month stint on a child-protection task force. Yet you won’t find her SIX YEARS on the board of directors of Wal-Mart Corporation. She may have earned a Grammy for “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.” But it takes a Governor’s wife to provide cover for Wal-Mart’s profiteering off systematic wage-enslavement of children in its factories in South America.

Hillary’s rake-in was made possible by Wal-Mart’s 100% union-free operation and out-sourcing of 100% of its manufacturing, some to prison factories in China. Now, you could say that Hillary couldn’t hear the screams of the kiddies in Kamp Wal-Mart in Honduras. After all, she relied on the intelligence provided her by the President (of Wal-Mart).

Fast forward to 1994 and the Brown ‘mother-f’ing tour guide’ business. According to Nolanda Hill, the Commerce Secretary’s long-time business partner and love interest, Brown, who died in 1996, endorsed a Hillary cash-for-access scheme ($10,000 for coffee with the President, $100,000 for a night in the Lincoln bedroom). However, Brown resented the discount rate the First Lady put on US executives joining Brown’s lucrative trade missions. ‘I’m worth more than $50,000 a pop!’ he said.

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/05/04/967/

An example of pandering to rightwing extremists, such as AIPAC:

But we know that the goal, the important, essential goal of a democratizing Middle East is complex, and it is not without risks. A few months ago, I went for the second time to Iraq and Kuwait and Afghanistan and Pakistan, and I returned home with hopefulness about what I had seen and learned, but also with a sense of caution about how we should proceed. In Iraq I saw firsthand the daily challenges confronting the Iraqi people. I met with a number of our troops, the brave young men and women who are on freedom's frontlines in Iraq. I met with our civilian representatives in the embassy and other agencies who are also risking their lives to help the Iraqi people.

<snip>

You know, it is on trips like that -- despite the often dangerous circumstances, I wish I could bring every one of my constituents -- all 19 million of them and any others who could come -- to see firsthand. I flew from Baghdad to Fallujah in a Blackhawk helicopter; met with the Marines who had liberated Fallujah from the insurgents and terrorists.

I met with many others of our Marines and soldiers who are committed to their mission to try to bring freedom to the people of Iraq.

<snip>

So there is no doubt that America has started down a path, with blood and treasure, to try to create the condition for democracy and freedom in the Middle East -- which has consequences for the entire region, for our security, and certainly for Israel's.

At this critical time in this complicated situation we find ourselves in, I think it's important to recognize the extraordinary stand that Prime Minister Sharon and the democratically elected government of Israel have taken as they face the risks and challenges of disengagement and as they try to deal with the newly elected Palestinian leadership.

The prime minister -- whom I am pleased to note will follow me to this stage -- and the state of Israel that he has devoted his entire life to serving are taking a tremendous risk.

19. IN 2004 the AFL-CIO endorsed Kerry who voted for NAFTA, instead of Kucinich who voted against it
I doubt they will support another pro-NAFTA candidate again.

Outside of New York, John Edwards is the preferred candidate of organized labour.
