"They're *ALL* crooks." Sigh. |
|
My father-in-law is a nice guy, but he's been voting Repuke lately. He was a trucker (Teamster, now retired) who spent too much time listening to Bad Radio. He had a very negative experience with Union Politics (where they "traded" a fair hearing on a case he was representing to benefit some upper Union folks), and uses "they're all crooks" to shut me down when I start bashing the current administration in his presence. He's also a "Clinton hater" if you know what I mean.
Yes, he knows the Republicans were the ones in power recently (and still are), and thus that means THEY are the crooks, but he's convinced *ALL* politicians regardless of party would be doing the same thing, and seems to prefer the "honesty" of the Republicans and their crookedness as opposed to the Democrats.
Any brilliant thoughts on eloquent, pithy ways to handle this situation? Like I said, he's a good guy, but obviously misguided. He also has a "life experience" to back up his opinions, and that is *really* hard to argue against.
Sigh.

1. Try agreeing with him and find a candidate who will reform the system. |
|
This is the kind voter who used to be a Democrat 20 years ago. Unless the party embraces reform and changes, it will be hard to appeal to this kind of voter. http://www.garyhartnews.comhttp://www.rungaryhart.comhttp://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3193854:kick: HART 2008! :kick:

2. It all comes down to unchecked power and authority |
|
Anyone in that position is capable of doing things for their own interst if no one holds them acountable. I've seen it firsthand with my ex. The most loving and generous woman after years in an executive position, wouldn't think twice about putting personal expenses on a company CC. Whether it's business, government, or union, someone has to shame them for their actions or hold them acountable. That's the way it worked in native American communities and it worked very well for hundreds of years.

3. Have a corrupt-off. Whomever finds the greatest number... |
|
...of corrupt politicians in a particular party gets dinner bought by the other. He makes a list of "corrupt Dems," you make a list of corrupt Rape-Publicans, and you both back them up with support links. Set a deadline of a week, maybe two, then you both meet at a mutually-agreed-upon restaurant to reveal your results before friends and family.
And, by the way, enjoy your free dinner.
(Next month, politicians with broken marriages... )
