1. 22% Approval for impeachment.
The Republicans need to be terrified.

2. NIxon was at 23% approval per gallup in '74 before resigning under threat of impeachment.
The shrub needs to be lower than Nixon?

Why can't we start the hearings in the Judiciary Committee on Cheney now so we avoid the pardon scenario?

11. Yes, he really does.
Right now, they're telling themselves that Nixon made a mistake. If he'd toughed it out, the Dems would have caved, but he wussed.

We need to show them that Nixon made the best of very bad choices. Which means we have to make their lives a living hell. "The evil you teach us, we will imitate. And it shall go hard, but we will better the instruction."

I want Republicans afraid to leave their homes for fear of the rage of their constituents. I want them to think that Nixon saved everybody's lives by leaving.

I want Republicans having panic attacks and diseases caused by multiple stress. Let them feel how we've been living. But worse.

3. As long as Rove approves of Bush, he isn't going anywhere.
Which is why his pasty ass needs to be in front of Congress.

Under oath and in front of cameras.

Rove is the key.

Think about the idiots and thugs that make up that last 28%. The second * does ANYTHING that even HINTS at working with congress (don't hold your breath on that one), his job approval will drop below 20%.

Yah, those folks who supported the surge, thought he did a heckuva job with Katrina, and are rooting to keep the war in Iraq going forever, why... yeah, the hate crime veto is just going to make them wonder what kind of a presidency they've been supporting.

5. I posted this elsewhere. The time is coming, and the momentum is OURS.
When you get dejected about how slowly this seems to be progressing...THINK OF THE CHANGES WE'VE SEEN.

IMPEACHMENT used to be absolutely verboten. Like a conceptual Lord Voldemort ("He Who Must Not Be Named") from the Harry Potter books. Time was when nobody even DARED bring it up in official circles. You just did NOT! Unpatriotic! Unamerican! Traitorous! Saddam-loving! Osama-enabling! Horrors! War on Terr!

Remember those days? They weren't all that long ago, either.

That's not the condition we are in now.

I just got a Zogby survey yesterday morning in which IMPEACHMENT was the first topic - and they devoted several questions to one's thoughts about the schmuck-in-chief. I've never seen that before. MoveOn.org just issued one, also. We now have a Congressman (Kucinich) who's not only broached the subject but introduced a bill in Congress. It has at least a couple of co-sponsors. There are IMPEACHMENT resolutions sprouting all over the country. More than, I believe it is, a dozen states have done so in at least one of their legislative bodies. In others, some of the local powers-that-be try to beat it down and it keeps coming back up. Another Congressman, John Murtha, now declares openly that he's hearing more and more from callers to his staff about IMPEACHMENT. Believe me, they ALL are. The floodwaters are RISING. It's becoming The Thing That Will Not Die. A fire that cannot be doused. A levee that doesn't stop leaking. Soon those trying to stop it will run out of fingers and toes and noses and whatever elses to stick into the holes to stop the leaking. This movement is not only not going away, it's gaining momentum. It's now become mainstream. It's in everyone's faces who's trying to stop or avoid or ignore it. For example, at the latest state Democratic Convention in San Diego, organizers set EVERY place at EVERY table at the big banquet with elegant cards printed with beautiful scrollwork that said "WE are the deciders. IMPEACHMENT IS ON THE TABLE." Nancy Pelosi was the guest of honor at that dinner. She's getting pounded. So are her lieutenants. So is everyone. Plus, I had one staffer in Henry Waxman's office tell me - when I called to urge him onward with his investigations and hearings to build a case for IMPEACHMENT - "that's what we're trying to do." The representatives are KEENLY aware of this. More painfully so every day. So are their staffers. So are their staffers' friends and relatives. So are the republi-CONS. It can't be hushed up, pushed down, sat on, or snuffed out any longer. A couple of years ago certainly. But not now.

And EVERY hearing that happens, EVERY new story in the Washington Post, EVERY fishy thing that turns up that seems somehow to route back directly to rove or cheney or elsewhere WITHIN the White House, EVERY additional American troop death reported in Iraq - EVERY ONE OF THESE THINGS WILL INCREASE THE MOMENTUM. And as the momentum increases, it gains speed and intensity and strength. It's alrady unstoppable. Soon it will run over those still trying to hold it back.

The floodwaters are rising. And bush and friends are the new New Orleans. WE are the new Katrina.

Which is why we CANNOT let up, or give up, now.

13. What we can & should do!!
A relatively simple gesture such as phoning, mailing, and/or e-mailing your representatives - several times ewach week consistently will reinforce the message.
They do monitor this kind of communication. Make it work!
Keep the message objective and courteous.

"I am asking for your support for putting forth articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush and V.P Richard (Dick) Cheney for lying to the American public to support their invasion of Iraq. (You can state evidence of the lies or insert your reason here - there's so much to go around).

6. You do realize that impeachment has nothing to do with approval ratings, right?
Edited on Sat May-05-07 01:14 PM by Richardo
Lots of arguments for impeachment. Low approval ratings not one of them.

8. Impeachment is ultimately a political decision. Presidents w high approval ratings aren't impeached.
As a previous poster pointed out, low approval ratings scare the dickens out of the Repubs.

Edited on Sat May-05-07 01:37 PM by Richardo
I don't think one really has anything to do with the other.

If you have a compelling enough case for the public and Congress, impeachment will happen. Ergo, investigations first.

As a matter of practicality, there's not enough time before the end of the term.

10. The low poll numbers make the President's party more inclined to vote conviction.
Edited on Sat May-05-07 01:44 PM by Hart2008
They want to save their own skins first.
Reagan had the Iran-Contra scandal, but his approval remained high. So there was no talk of impeaching Reagan. (He was probably ignorant of the details, but his V.P. had to have been running it.)
Truman and Carter had low approval ratings, but they didn't have any major scandals to merit considering impeachment.
Combine a major scandal with low approval ratings, and impeachment becomes likely. (See Richard M. Nixon.)

End of the term or not, soldiers are dying in an unpopular war. Impeaching the President and Vice President, Cheney first without a replacement, is the sure way to end the war.

12. The Republicans did NOT have a compelling case to impeach Bill.
But they pretended they did and the treasonous MSM backed them up. They expected Clinton's numbers to fall. It freaked everybody that they rose. Which is why they weren't able to get him out.

16. I agree.
They forced the impeachment, and incidentally lowered the bar horribly on the grounds necessary. The American people resented the attempted coup (because that's exactly what is was) and rallied around their duly elected leader.

Still, the ability to impeach does not have that much to do with popularity, in my view.

26. It IS another log on the fire.
It adds to OUR arsenal of lobbying and talking points. Not to theirs. And it makes him far more vulnerable and less likely to retain loyalty. After all, it will soon become clear to everyone up for lease extension in 2008 that it's THEIR asses on the line - not his. And they'll start pulling away accordingly. Remember, even CNN noted that it was a full hour into the republi-CON candidates' debate before junior's name came up. A full hour. For ten aging white men. These guys placing themselves out front already seem to be painfully aware of what standing by caligula means. And election time is a year and a half away.

14. We need it lower, sadly
Because we need Republicans to be running scared and looking out for themselves first.

Although, if we impeach and the public support for impeachment tops say 65% or something like that and the GOP still blocks it in the Senate, we might just be able to sink the entire Republican Party.

15. Investigations first
That's the first place to start. And we need to start using the word 'crime.' In the case of this administration, that word is used far too little.

25. amen!!
too many people equate impeachment with removal from office, but not with investigating officeholders who are not treated as civilians under the law.

because the executive branch enforces the law, Congress has the power to impeach the President. if members of the administration are found guilty of a crime, then Congress should immediately remove them from office.

but why does Congress lower its standards for the President? Why is impeachment off the table for someone who should be held to a much higher standard than the average citizen? Impeachment shouldn't happen only when the President breaks the law but also when the President lies to Congress..abuses his authority, and is not able to perform his duties. This President shouldn't be allowed to leave office until he is held accountable for his crimes and incompetence. I supported Clinton's impeachment, but not his removal from office. I think every President should be held to the highest possible standard, and required to publicly defend or confess his actions..legal or illegal, to the legislative branch of government.

Lets be realistic, yes he should be impeached, though he should be but will not be removed. The Senate does NOT have the 2/3 majority to convict.

30. It doesn't right now
but take it from an ex-GOPer: the closer we move to 2008, and the more overwhelming the evidence, and the less and less popular he becomes (remember even the extreme right can bail from Bush for reasons of their own), the more senators will peel off the Bush bodyguard detail. Nobody wants to die protecting a political corpse. And not all of those GOP senators are as committed right wingers as they seem: many are opportunists who will sway with the political winds.

If and when impeachment is a reality, there will be Republicans in support of it. Maybe ever 8+ GOP senators.

Imagine Domenici needing to vote for impeachment to save his sorry ass.

Those GOPer Senators will feel a tremendous amount of political pressure to impeach the lying bastard.

It could happen, but how many more need to die in the mean time?
