Republicans and the 'Culture of Debt' |
|
Edited on Sun May-06-07 10:10 PM by NoodleBoy
After reading some stuff about Kevin Phillips, it sort of struck me that no one has stuck this phrase on the Republicans yet.
Starting with Reagan, they've dragged America into a 'Culture of Debt,' with the excuse that cutting taxes would stimulate economic growth.
In reality, though, the only thing the federal government did was borrow money from foreign sources and throw that money at the American people, because while techincally taxes were cut, spending was not cut, it was even increased in some sectors.
This culture of debt, then, is one in which Republicans believe they don't have to be fiscally responsible in government, because while they'll rail at insufferable taxes they also know there are few public programs they could get rid of without Americans realizing the con they're selling.
And yes, this all started with Reagan, so if a Republican tells you that they lost in 2006 because the American people wanted them to be more like Reagan, you can tell them they lost because they've been acting exactly like Reagan--recklessly slashing funding and then borrowing to make up for it, dealing stubbornly with the international community, and opposing the scientific consensus on emerging crises, marketed in pious religious language with strong free-market overtones. For the rest of us, it means we're living in a Republican-sponsored culture of debt.

anyway, don't try to cram too many concepts into too few words, it gets distracting.
