BAGHDAD, May 10 — Vice President Dick Cheney spoke to American troops stationed near former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s birth place today, but the visit was far from a victory lap.

“We’re fighting a war against terror,” the vice president said, according to the prepared text of his remarks. “We are here, above all, because the terrorists who have declared war on America and other free nations have made Iraq the central front in that war.”

His sober assessment stood in stark contrast to the one he made two years ago when he declared in an interview on CNN that the insurgency was in its “last throes.”

“Extremists from inside and outside the country want to stir an endless cycle of violence, and Al Qaeda is operating and trying to open new fronts,” Mr. Cheney said.

Excuse me, but I believe we made Iraq the central front in the so called war on terror. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 or connection with Al Qaeda. And Bushco wanted Saddam's head before he even took his stolen office.
