Mitch Daniels signed a bill into law that will increase cigarette taxes by 44 cents per pack to help provide health insurance to more Hoosiers and fund other medical care initiatives.
Daniels said the higher tax alone should lead to a reduction in smoking and keep many youngsters from taking up the habit. But he also praised the pending, new health insurance program as one that will help thousands of people acquire coverage and provide immunizations for more children.
"Today we are taking a long step toward a dream of a healthier Indiana," Daniels said to the crowd in the north atrium of the Statehouse before signing the bill.
The tax increase, which takes effect July 1, is expected to bring in $206 million more annually. If the federal government approves the health plan, money from the tax increase could leverage more federal dollars and bring in a combined $750 million to $800 million a year, officials said.
Oh, btw, Mitch Daniels is a
Republican and a former Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget in the Bush administration!!
