Dana Milbank's Hate-Filled Obsession with Dennis Kucinich and the Progressive Democratic Base
Submitted by Bob Fertik on May 11, 2007 - 9:21am.

If the Pentagon Post's David Broder fancies himself as the academic "Dean" of the Washington Press Corpse, Dana Milbank fancies himself as the class clown.

But Milbank is a bitter, angry clown who is obsessed with his hatred of the progressive base of the Democratic Party, and he especially likes to take it out on Dennis Kucinich.

Why? Because up-from-the-streets Kucinich has the extraordinary guts to speak the truth about U.S. imperialism from the heart of its capital city, while Yale-educated Milbank is a paycheck whore for the Pentagon and the neocons who run it, and he is terrified by Kucinich's threat to his paycheck.

But Milbank reached a new low on Keith Olbermann's show on Thursday when he was asked about Republicans once again defrauding America by pretending to turn against the war while giving it yet another "Friedman Unit."

Olbermann: Our friend Craig Crawford wrote today the same Republicans who said in January there had to be success by summer or else are now saying there has to be success by September or else. Obviously Craig wrote that before we learned about the gang of 11, but is he to some degree right when he suggests Republicans are using the equivalent of Muhammad Ali's old rope-a-dope?

Milbank: He's absolutely correct that things have slipped back but you have sort of an equal and opposite reaction going on on the Democratic side where they're very deeply split, and you have the anti-war caucus, sort of the Dennis Kuciniches, are getting very much alienated from the mainstream of the party there as well. So you have the schedule being pushed back to September on one side but you have anti-war Democrats being neutralized a bit as well.

1. I hate Milbank
I cringe when KO has him on; every question or proposition KO puts to him comes back with a huge caveat for the Repukes;

He is a slimy, smary little pissant of a media whore; always a sly little smirk on his face; he is not fit to lick KO's boots and I never cease to wonder why KO has him on the program; he shoots down every goddam thing KO tries to get across.

Bastard

2. I've written both Crawford and Millbank off as two typical bar and
restaurant journalists. Work for them is pure gossip and quips. Then they get to go on the Olberman Show - compliments of GE and Microsoft.

6. People need to realize that the base is neither the left or the center.
But an amalgam of both.Either side laying claim to the honor of being the only base is delusional.

14. well, it is unusual to see anyone on DU claim "the base" is anything other than...
.. the most liberal of liberals in the party.

15. Counter-Claims, Sir
That it is everything but the left-most portion of the Party's political spectrum are hardly unheard of, even here....

11. Well Said, My Friend
To be more precise, perhaps, the base comprises those who accept amalgamation into its whole, alongside others who may be to their right or left personally, and are willing to act in solidarity with them.

5. The are just younger Robert Novak's.
All gossip and cliche from within the beltway with no real substance. I think that's what the post uses them for.

At least they have not outed a CIA Agent!

7. Mr. Fertik Is Rather Shrill, Ma'am
The analysis is a sound one: a small number of Representatives, of whom Rep. Kucinich is emblematic, are making difficulties from the left for our House leadership in the present political confrontation with the administration. These people are no more to be praised for their factionalism than the similar number who make difficulties from the right. They do not represent the 'base' or the 'mainstream' of the Democratic Party: those who vote cohesively with the Speaker do that.

10. I heard a radio preacher the other day
calling Dana Milbank an "ultra-leftist liberal."

It sounded like Pat Robertson, but I'm not sure--I listened for 30 seconds and turned it to NPR.

16. In a contest for the most supercilious pundit in DC, Dana would
win a close contest with Jim Warren. What a jerk!

17. Milbank is a neo-con like his employers at the WaPo. Aside from
that, he is wrong on the facts. The anti-war part of the Democratic Caucus produced 169 votes in favor of the Jim McGovern bill to stop the war. That's a majority of the caucus, and that's the MAINSTREAM.
