Blair to stand down on June 27

Matthew Tempest, political correspondent
Thursday May 10, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

Tony Blair today announced he was stepping down after 10 years as prime minister and 13 as Labour leader. The prime minister returned to his political roots in the north east for his swansong, telling supporters at Trimdon Labour club he would stand down as PM on June 27. He will tender his resignation to the Queen on that day.

In an emotional 17-minute speech, he said the judgment on his 10-year administration was "for you, the people, to make". Mr Blair paid special tribute to his wife and children "who never let me forget my failings". And he apologised for "the times I have fallen short".

But he concluded: "Hand on heart, I did what I thought was right. I may have been wrong - that's your call. But I did what I thought was right for our country.

end of excerpt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Fallen short?" Is that what he thinks of the crime he committed regarding backing up LIES that killed thousands of innocent people? What are the British people going to now do to hold Tony Blair accountable for his war crimes? He was with Bush on this illegal occupation in Iraq lock stock and barrel and has just as much blood on his hands. But he steps down and not one word about his part in this? Where is the justice? And really for me this is in a way sad because I once respected this man.
3. the main thing, though,
don't you think, is that he is gone? Bush will be gone soon, too.
4. No that doesn't wash away the crime
So are you also saying that as long as Bush slinks away he can be forgiven too? I surely then do not live in the America I once cherished.
6. No, what I
am saying is that first it is more important to stop the ongoing criminal activity, prevent more deaths. Only then can you think about the past, and what should be done about it.
However, if that is your standard for the 'America you cherish', I'd say kiss it goodbye. Bush most likely will never be brought to trial, IMHO.
7. In America, and in most civilized countries,
when people commit crimes, they get punished for them. Clinton did, and his crime barely even existed. Blair and Bush both were complicit in major war crimes, and their punishment should be...what? A cushy retirement home for each in the resort area of their choice? "Senior Fellow" positions at the think tank of their choice?
Like the slogan goes, "Want peace? Work for Justice." IMO, Bliar and Bush ought to be in the Hague as of now.
9. Well, maybe
charges will be brought by the next Democratic administration;-)
But if not, at least they are out. Or will be soon.
13. Yes, the Hague
But America didn't sign the Rome Accords either so they wouldn't have to account for their atrocities. I simply can't believe his departure is being treated so non chalantly... then again, maybe I can.
8. I hope Brown brings some sanity back to the UK...
I've heard he was rather nonplussed at having to defend Blair's disastrous war policy and wants to withdraw the troops at once.
10. I am writing you people from Paris right now,,,,
...(on a French keyboard that is driving me as crazy as their language!!!)
Anyway, the point I'd like to make is that for Idiot Son, one door closes and another one opens--guess who's getting a new (French) poodle now that Blair is leaving...
You should see all the merde here about Sarkozy....it's like he's freakin royalty, or the Great French hope. Being here in the thick of it, I can tell you this Dude and Bush are a clusterfuck waiting to happen. I guess we should be glad Blair is leaving---otherwise we'd have the Trifecta.
Oh, one more thing, OT--I just came from Versailles, and if Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette weren't the 18th century George and Laura, then I don't know how else to describe them. They lived in an opulent bubble while France was starving and desolate. Let 'em eat cakes, indeed!!!
11. France rocks ...
... but its keyboards suck ass. Some of the locals agree.
Yeah, it's always the way... France better stick to its guns.
At least we're safe from those Trifecta looney tunes. A WH full of them's enough.
12. Think Sarkozy got this legitimately?
Just seems so timely to me.
15. Actually, not really!
But my knowledge of this language doesn't allow me nuance enough to feel the situation out. I can tell you, everyone here's going about their business as if nothing's gonna change...and it probably won't for awhile. I just think this is a really bad mistake for them.
Although, even with my inability to understand French, it's obvious all around me that the average person here is FAR more politically engaged than your idiot Moran middle-American. Faux news would never make it over here; the French are pretty sophisticated and the communist and socialist party members are out and proud...so maybe there's hope they won't fall for the propaganda as easily as the Americans do!
