Congress and Bush Share Low Approval

By ALAN FRAM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - People think the Democratic-led Congress is doing just as dreary a job as President Bush, following four months of bitter political standoffs and little progress on Iraq and a host of domestic issues.

An AP-Ipsos poll also found that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) is a more popular figure than the president and her colleagues on Capitol Hill, though she faces a gender gap in which significantly more women than men support her.

The survey found only 35 percent approve of how Congress is handling its job, down 5 percentage points in a month. That gives lawmakers the same bleak approval rating as Bush, who has been mired at about that level since last fall, including his dip to a record low for the AP-Ipsos poll of 32 percent last January.

"It's mostly Iraq" plus a lack of progress in other areas, said Rep. Tom Cole (news, bio, voting record), R-Okla., who heads the House GOP's campaign committee. "These are not good numbers for an incumbent, and it doesn't matter if you have an 'R' or a 'D' next to your name."

Democrats agree that the problem is largely Iraq, which has dominated this year's session of Congress while producing little more than this month's Bush veto of a bill requiring the withdrawal of U.S. troops. It has also overshadowed House-passed bills on stem cell research, student loans and other subjects that the White House opposes, they say.

end of excerpt.

I know one thing Congress could do that would shoot their approval rating through the roof...it has something to do with honoring the oaths they took. Any guesses?

1. "Democrats agree that the problem is largely Iraq..."
Actually, the problem is Democrats kowtowing to Bush on virtually every single issue we elected them to fix including impeaching that son of a bitch and his brain, "The Dick" Cheney.

2. I saw numbers recently that had Congress at 54% and * at 30 more or less.
The AP isn't a source I'd put my money on.

4. this article is depressing
i just found this story too and was going to post it but you beat me to it. there's some good news in the poll results, but lots of depressing stats too, like "Only 48 percent of Democrats said they approved of Congress, down from 55 percent last month. That included a 12 percentage point drop among Democratic women, though support from Democratic men remained steady. Approval by minorities also fell a dozen points to 39 percent..."

people may want to discount it as propaganda, but i've seen the results borne out by my friends and acquaintances. they mostly say congress, and pelosi in particular, is as bad as bush if not worse. the anger has been worst among my hispanic friends.

5. It isn't Iraq per se it is accountability.
I want accountability.....On Iraq, on Politicizing out government, our Justice System, on all the corruption, on the takeover of our government by corporations, etc. etc. etc. etc. Gonzales is still there and will remain there. That is why I am unhappy with Congress. They seem to be holding hearings that achieve absolutey nothing. I want these thugs Impeached and our government back into the business of caring for the Citizens. Until that happens I will hold them all in very low esteem..
