Religion/Abortion...My Decision |
|
With all of the important issues facing our nation in this day and age I have come to the conclusion that way too much time is being spent on the subjects of religion and abortion. Religion, as I perceive it, is a private matter. I'm Catholic, it works for me, so end of discussion as far as I'm concerned. Abortion, not a nice subject but sometimes necessary for both medical and in the event of criminality i.e. rape, for me, end of discussion.
Why then is so much time being spent on the candidates and their views on these matters. The subject of abortion especially, requiring an opinion from men no less, is absurd. I don't care what the candidates religion, ethnicity, or opinions on abortion are. What I do care about are their stands on the economy, education, health care, and most of all the WOT. I want to know the answers to these questions. I am sick of the inordinate amount of time being wasted on questions that are decided individually anyway. Roe vs. Wade still??? Thought that had already been decided. Okay, take away that decision, abortions will still continue albeit in horrible manner.
Let's insist the media grow up, make the pundits/journalists ask the hard questions. I already know personally about religion and abortion and I don't care a whit what the candidates think about either of them.

1. Because some people think |
|
that your private matters are their concern. And the candidates sell out to the ones that make the most noise about making private matters public.

2. The American Taliban types disagree with you. They are determined |
|
to create a theocracy in this country. If you haven't looked at Mark Crispin Miller's youtube story, about the schools of higher education that are training the people to infiltrate our government, take a look http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x28021

3. The candidates will opine what they think you want to hear anyway, so I mean, what's the point? |

I spent my entire adult life believing that freedom of religion and thus by necessity, separation of church and state were constitutionally guaranteed principles. These past many years have taught me differently. When we get the chance I think someone should put those words into the constitution in such a way as people in the future wont get the same terrible surprise.

6. The key issue for many of them is when does life begin, and its a fair question |
|
There are also the ethicists who have posed the question why does emerging from the woman change the status fetus/child? An academic question only at this point, but certainly worthy of discussion in the broader view. I consider such discussions reasonable, regardless of gender, though they won't fit into the soundbite politicing well.
For others it is a question of dominance and control of women, which is unconscionable.

7. Because if certain of these people get elected |
|
then neither your religion, nor your choices concerning abortion will be a private matter any longer.
I don't understand why people don't get this. If these people remain in power, then things which have hitherto been personal and private matters will come under state control. I want to elect people who will ensure that matters that should be private will remain private. That's why it matters what a candidate thinks about these issues.

8. I did once get about two minutes of silence |
|
from a young right-winger (by young I mean he was about 13) when he started riding yet once again about abortion by simply saying, "If you don't believe in abortion, then don't have one."
To me it's as simple as that.
Some of the women I know who are most adamant about choice are ones who found themselves with an unplanned/unwanted pregnancy that they went through with. it was what they chose at the time, and would NEVER expect someone else to make the same choice under similar circumstances. Choice is exactly that.
