'08: In Iowa and elsewhere, it may come down to who has the best TV ads
Yeah, it sounds superficial, but I was doing some research on the '08 candidate's media teams. Edwards, Hillary and Obama have some proven pros on that front. Bill Richardson has a really funny and effective ad that is running in Iowa so his media team looks very sharp this early.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjOuL5qwNIc&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eoliverwillis%2Ecom%2F2007%2F05%2Fnew%5Fads%5Ffrom%5Fbi%2Ehtml

Ok, so I looked up John Kerry's '04 media team for the primaries, and it turns out Jim Margolis from the GMMB consulting firm directed his TV ads for the primaries. Here's a bit on Jim Margolis:

Mr. Margolis, besides handling a number of gubernatorial and senatorial campaigns, produced some early ads during Mr. Kerry's primary race four years ago that were widely credited for the Massachusetts senator's strong showing in Iowa. He left the Kerry campaign early in April 2004 in a split described then as a fee dispute.

From what I've heard, Kerry was badly trailing Dean in Iowa up until he released his "Cure" tv ad. http://www.gwu.edu/~action/2004/ads04/kerrad112603.html

Who knows, maybe Kerry would have beaten Bush if Margolis had stayed on his team after the primaries. Anyway, Jim Margolis has signed on to direct Obama's ads with assist from David Axelrod.

3. I don't even remember that ad
I highly doubt it had anything to do with winning in Iowa, his numbers didn't start turning until later in December. He had some good ads, with locals talking straight into the camera. I don't know who did those, but those were the ones that had an impact. As I recall it anyway.

If the numbers did start shifting the end of Nov, I'd say it was due to Dean's very freaky "You've got the power" episode at the Des Moines J-J Dinner.

4. Richardson's ad..
Has been great water-cooler talk in Iowa (in Cedar Rapids anyway)...I think this will bump his numbers.

6. My sister-in-law says one of the reasons *ss did so well in 04 was
because the pugs did a better job of marketing research on the attention getting colors in their commercials. I did not see what she was talking about but that is because I am more interested in the message. When we run a commercial we are trying to attract voters who are undecided so we need to get their attention first.
