U.S., Iran OK direct Iraq talks
BAGHDAD -- In a historic step for two of the world's bitterest foes, the U.S. and Iran are to open a direct dialogue on issues relating to Iraq at talks to be held in Baghdad, the two countries said Sunday.

Under growing pressure to produce results in the Iraq war or bring the troops home, the Bush administration has been signaling for weeks that it is eager to open negotiations with Iran on Iraq's future  , an acknowledgment of the vast influence Iran now wields in Iraq.

"The president authorized this channel because we must take every step possible to stabilize Iraq and reduce the risk to our troops even as our military continue to act against hostile Iranian-backed activity in Iraq," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe told reporters traveling with President Bush in Virginia.

In March, lower-level U.S. and Iranian diplomats did hold rare, brief talks on the sidelines of a Baghdad gathering. At a follow-up conference a week ago in Egypt, there was a casual chat between the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and Iran's deputy foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi.

Until this spring, the Bush administration had dismissed calls for both outreach to Iran and Syria. At the Egyptian conference, Rice did sit down for a talk with Syria's top diplomat.

--Oh so it WAS just weeks ago that they pulled their head out to see the light.....gee what was it that happened a couple of weeks ago???? That WAS in the new....what was it now????? -----

1. Yes, they signaled that and NO ONE believed them.
And then Cheney visited the Middle East and people watched to see if he was re-educating people after Rice's visit.

2. The real reason for Cheney's trip to the ME was to get Egypt and Jordan
back singing the "Bomb Iran" tune.

But they told him "Uh uh" in no uncertain terms.

AMMAN, Jordan: Two top U.S. allies in the Mideast, Jordan and Egypt, have told U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney they want to see a peaceful solution to Washington's standoff with Iran and the U.S. should focus on reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, officials said.

Cheney was in Jordan Monday a day after visiting Egypt as part of a Middle East tour designed to convince the United States' moderate Arab allies to support Iraq's embattled government. But Cheney also sounded out Arab governments on increasing Iranian influence in the region and took a hardline stance against Iran's nuclear ambitions and efforts to dominate the Gulf region.

During their talks, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warned Cheney against any military confrontation concerning the Iran because it would have "grave repercussions on the region," his spokesman Suleiman Awaad said Sunday after Mubarak met with the vice president.

Jordan said it opposes any military action against Iran, said a Jordanian official. . .

Abdullah said earlier that "Jordan stands in support of a peaceful resolution to the issue of Iran's nuclear capabilities that would spare the region further tensions," according to a royal palace statement.

Notice this story is from the IHT overseas. So now here in the US the corporate media is out in full force saying a peaceful Iran is all BushCo's idea in the first place.
