New York TimesViewers of the Fox News Channel were significantly more likely than the general population to call themselves Republicans, according to data released last week by Scarborough Research, the consumer research firm.
The Speed Channel, a cable channel that features car and motorcycle racing, had viewers who were 22 percent more likely than the average adult to self-identify as Republicans, the study found. Viewers of Country Music Television were 20 percent more likely to do so, and viewers of the Golf Channel were 31 percent more likely to have said they were Republicans.
Democrats were 78 percent more likely than the general population to have watched the Black Entertainment Network’s cable channel, and 29 percent more likely to have watched SoapNet, a channel for fans of soap operas.
The numbers, which were weighted for geography, age, education, race and household size, reflect the percentage of people who had watched a given channel during the last week and described themselves as Democrats or Republicans. They were gathered through a random telephone survey followed by a mail-in booklet, and incorporated answers from about 186,000 people.
