If they had both been virgins on their wedding night-- or even if they had slept only with one another before the wedding-- they certainly could have gotten away with lying about it.

My guess is that at least ONE of them slept with SOMEONE ELSE before they got married, and they're afraid that one or more persons might blab that to the press.
