Activist/actor Danny Glover endorses John Edwards

The Danny Glover Primary
John Nichols

Few prominent activists are more willing to put their time and energy into the struggle for economic and social justice than actor Danny Glover. The man who describes himself "as a child of the Civil Rights Movement" has been stirring things up since his days as a member of the Black Students Union at San Francisco State University in the 1960s.

In the 1980s, he was an outspoken critic of U.S. support for the death squads of Central America the apartheid regime in South Africa. The latter campaigning led to his selection to serve as the chairman of the board of TransAfrica Forum, the Washington-based group that plays a critical role in lobbying U.S. policymakers on behalf of African and Caribbean countries. At home in the U.S., Glover has picketed with striking workers, marched for immigrant rights and tirelessly campaigned against the war in Iraq.

All that activism has made Glover a well-regarded figure on the political left. After years of turning to him to aid their strikes, rallies and teach-ins, activists take the actor's commitments and endorsements seriously. I got a sense of the regard for Glover when I introduced him in January to 4,000 activists from across the country at the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis -- the standing ovation and the deafening applause made it clear that this man has a following that is rooted in far more than his Hollywood-star status.

So who is Glover backing for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008?

John Edwards.

6. The Truth Is… Far More People Are For Edwards Than The “Media” Care to “Talk” About…

I chose to endorse John Edwards long ago after having met him in person a couple of times, observed his interactions with other people like myself and watched as his populist policies evolved. Thanks to Danny Glover coming out in favor of the best "candidate for the people." We have plenty of candidates who are very good for "the corporation"... on both sides of the aisle. Lets hope that more well known, respected people demonstrate the personal courage to publicly oppose the DLC/Corporatist dems and fight for America's Presidential Candidate in 2008.

The following is my endorsement of Senator Edwards.

Thu Dec 28, 2006 at 12:38:11 PM PDT

Dear Friends:

Today, December 28th 2006 John Edwards formally announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the office of President of the United States. He had been working to help the people of New Orleans many of whom remain dramatically impacted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina... Now a distant memory for most Americans...

It is with great enthusiasm that I write you today asking you to join me in endorsing the candidacy of Senator John Edwards, in the 2008 race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

John Russell Fl 5's diary :: ::
In a world ravaged by chaos, respect for America as the great beacon of light from which sound judgment and leadership are the norm, rather than the exception must be restored. John Edwards is the one individual in my opinion who will restore objective positive consideration and judgment to our nations highest office.
John Edwards has expressed his opinions and taken action on behalf of the major issues of the day including his admission of regret regarding his vote for the war in Iraq. I am confident that he will demonstrate the courage to place action behind his words in beginning to take the steps necessary to move American forces out of Iraq as he said in his announcement this morning.

I heard John Edwards not only this morning, but in the past, point his favor toward a universal health care system covering all Americans, as well as investments in alternative energy to break our nations dependence on fossil fuels.

John Edwards has spoken of two Americas... one that represents those individuals who live in the very top tier and in contrast to the huddled masses who live in an ever-growing bottom tier. The middle class is shrinking. John Edwards offers answers to the growing economic chasm that gives rise to this "Two Americas" problem.

Restoring "progressivity" to a Federal Tax policy that is now essentially flat as a result of the Bush tax cuts (disproportionately benefiting the top 1% of income earners), is mandatory if America is to stave off further declines in the ranks of the middle class.

It is my considered opinion that the former Senator from North Carolina is the only candidate with the political courage to carry out what needs to be done in order to accomplish this necessary goal.

America is not in a good place in so many ways today as I write this message. In this historic time America and the world are in need of a person of great character and judgment in this most important of positions; A person who will place a steady hand on the helm of this great country who can and will motivate and work with other capable people to lead the world out of this tumultuous storm of turmoil in which it finds itself.

Lets work together to put John Edwards in White House in January of 2009. Let's work together to help John Edwards realize his dream of achieving "One America".

Thank you for your attention.

John Russell, Dade City, Florida

But that's great news for Edwards. Glover is one of the finest people on the planet, one of the most dedicated and tireless activists. I have huge respect for him. Huge.
