Not me, SaveElmer, but from a diary posted on DailyKos... Poster is MarkW...who posts there quite frequently I believe...don't want any confusion...this was not written by me (SaveElmer)
Those who have read my diaries and comments know that I strongly support Hillary Clinton for president. Overall, I am very impressed with her political vision, experience, ability, and willingness to fight for what's right. However, beyond my general support for her, I have had a very specific and personal experience which has amplified my admiration for her. Read more beneath the fold.
In 2003, my 10-month-old son died in my car in circumstances I can't even bear to recount. Since that time, I have been involved with children's safety organizations that work to prevent children being injured or killed in and around cars, for example, by being being backed over, trapped in power windows, trapped in trunks, or left in vehicles. These non-traffic incidents take hundreds of lives a year, but are not currently addressed by current transportation code, which only focuses on traffic accidents. Many of these non-traffic incidents could be easily prevented by use of simple cost-effective technologies that already exist, if regulations were in place to ensure that.
For the last four years, I have been working with children's safety organizations, such as Kids and Cars, to pass legislation that would, for the first time, require regulations to help prevent these incidents. During this time, there has been only one Senator who has consistently taken the lead in fighting for this legislation: Hillary Clinton. Hillary's staff, and Hillary herself, have put in long hours understanding the nuts and bolts of all the details involved and patiently putting together a bi-partisan effort to get this legislation through.
The effort narrowly failed in the last Congress and is on the agenda again this year. Hillary is sponsoring S. 694 and has gathered 24 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle. A companion bill, H.R. 1216, is making its way through the House. There is an excellent chance the legislation will pass this year.
This is not the type of legislation that gets headlines for a Senator. It's not sexy or jazzy. Just a ton of hard work to save a few hundred kids' lives a year. It would be quite easy for Hillary to back off from these kinds of efforts in the midst of a presidential campaign. I am tremendously moved that, of all the 100 Senators, she is the one who has been willing to take the lead on something so dear to my heart.
Whether or not you support Hillary, I invite you to ask your Senator or Representative to cosponsor S. 694 or H.R. 1216. And I hope this personal tale will help you understand one reason, though far from the only one, why I support Hillary for president.
