Pass the Popcorn ...
... 'cause THIS is gonna be GOOD!
By Nancy Greggs

Apparently the Republicans’ political consultants, PR advisors, think tanks and focus groups have collectively come to the same conclusion: September is the point of no return, the last possible moment that the GOP can continue to support their Fearless Leader and his Iraq war policies without losing it all in 2008.

Well, I don’t know how much money got spent on that useless piece of information (and it was probably a lot), but I could have told them the unvarnished truth, free of charge: Nice try, but you’re more than four years too late.

It certainly comes as no surprise that with the public’s waning support for this war, the GOP – ever mindful of which way the wind is blowing – would suddenly decide that their heretofore unshakable loyalty to BushCo would require, shall we say, a little attitude readjustment.

But what intrigues me is exactly how they plan on switching horses in mid-stream without winding up with nothing more than soggy derrieres.

In this case, the possibilities are, indeed, not endless, because even though they are masters of the craft, there is only so much BS even a Republican politician can fling.

Will it be the America, you got punk’d scenario? “Yo, we were never for this war. Don’t tell me you believed that crap! We was just funnin’ with you; where’s your sense of humor? Like, dude, when we called you all Al Qeada-lovin’ traitors, didn’t you see us wink?”

Perhaps they’ll adopt the deny-you-ever-said-it stance, popularized by George “It was never about stay-the-course” Bush himself: “As we’ve said from day one of this fiasco, this entire venture was a disastrous idea.”

They could use the Alberto Gonzales approach: “You know, we just don’t recall ever being for this invasion of Iraq thing at all,” or the WH press secretary classic: “We are still looking into exactly what our previous position was and, unfortunately, cannot comment on an ongoing investigation.”

The Fundies might appreciate the Jim Swaggart drama of dissolving into tears and praying for forgiveness for their errant ways, or perhaps an apparition of the Lord Himself telling them that wandering in the desert for forty years is old school, and He’s decided on a new direction for his Chosen Warmongers.

Of course, my personal favorite – and I’m really hoping they go with this one – is: "We were behind this whole Iraq thing as long as it was successful, which it was until yesterday. But in the last twenty-four hours, it just all started falling apart,” perhaps followed with the fiscal responsibility aspect: “You know, we told Bush from the beginning, we’ll support you up to the hundred thousand trillion mark. But a penny more than that, and we’re out of here.”

Of course, no matter how you slice it, dice it, fold, spindle, staple or mutilate it, it still comes down to the same thing: “We were for this war, until we were against it.” Talk about your own words coming back to bite you in the ass – and then some.

Let’s face it, GOP. No matter what you say, what you do, how much you rattle, prattle, obfuscate, fudge, make excuses, make amends, try to deceive, nothin’ up my sleeve, distract, infer, imply, deny, and generally talk out of the other side of your smirky mouths, the facts are the facts, and they are inescapable.

This is your war, the one you have supported, funded, and cheerleaded literally to death, and there isn’t a voter in this country who’s going to forget who was waving those big-ass pom-poms while it was politically expedient to do so – not now, not in the next election, not ever.

NOT EVER.

7. You left out one crucial day in that deadline that the Cons have been
throwing into the faces of Americans since September 12, 2001. :hi:

We need to keep the pressure up on the fact it was a foreseen disaster, and make SURE it is not once again 'misleadingly' tied to September 11th! I have this dreadful suspicion that when Karl looks at all of the cards in the deck, the "9/11!!!" factor will be his favorite...once again.

The only saving grace in it is that Bush's approval is only at something like 28% on this, if not lower. He has zero credibility. BUT, desperate people do desperate things...and that scare the shit out of me.

9. It's true that desperate people do desperate things ...
... but keep in mind how desperate the entire citizenry is right now to finally know the truth, to bring the troops home, and to stop the endless bloodshed, the lying, the corruption.

Take heart in the fact that, however slow it may seem, the vast majority of Americans eventually seek out the truth and, once they find it, protect and defend it.

I may not believe in this administration, or in politicians in general -- but my belief in my fellow citizens' ability to do the right thing has never been stronger than it is right now.

I agree with your whole series of rants over the past months. Every point you make in this insightful lashing of shrub and Co. is spot on!

But!

But it really does not matter. GOP will attack Iran, make it look like Iran is at fault and the use the 'noise' machine to terrify the people into backing the GOP. Every point of accountability will be washed out.

I seriously doubt there will ever be an honest day of reckoning for the lowest of low life at GOP. Regardless, keep up your efforts to bring out the truth.

30. a big HELL YEAH!
As a portent of things to come, that slime McConnell says "as soon as the Iraqis ask us to leave, we're out of there."

The whole "they'll follow us home" and "the mideast will get 100 times worse" mantra just went poof. He says we "serve at the pleasure of Maliki" and will go quietly into the night, just like those pesky US Attorneys were supposed to do.

And that, of course, begs the question "What the fuck are we waiting for?"

If there is no downside to leaving tomorrow if Maliki says to, then why wait 'til September?

I think I'll start a special section of my "Faces" website just tallying those killed after the veto. Granted we'd not already be out, so some/most would have died regardless, but they represent those who WILL die after we WOULD HAVE BEEN out. Those faces need to haunt every one of these slimy doublethink-doubletalkers.

Edited on Tue May-15-07 05:09 PM by ProudDad
"The Act found that Iraq had, between 1980 and 1998 (1) committed various and significant violations of International Law, (2) had failed to comply with the obligations to which it had agreed to following the Gulf War and (3) further had ignored Resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. The Act declared that it was the Policy of the United States to support "regime change." The Act was passed 360-38 in the U.S. House of Representatives<2> and by unanimous consent in the Senate.<3> US President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on October 31, 1998. The law's stated purpose was: "to establish a program to support a transition to democracy in Iraq." Specifically, Congress made findings of past Iraqi military actions in violation of International Law and that Iraq had denied entry of United Nations Special Commission on Iraq (UNSCOM) inspectors into its country to inspect for weapons of mass destruction. Congress found: "It should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime." On December 16, 1998, President Bill Clinton mandated Operation Desert Fox, a major four-day bombing campaign on Iraqi targets."

"This act required the President to designate one or more qualified recipients of assistance, with the primary requirement being opposition to the present Saddam Hussein regime. Such groups should, according to the Act, include a broad spectrum of Iraqi individuals, groups, or both, who are opposed to the Saddam Hussein regime, and are committed to democratic values, respect for human rights, peaceful relations with Iraq's neighbors, maintaining Iraq's territorial integrity, and fostering cooperation among democratic opponents of the Saddam Hussein regime. On February 4, 1999 President Clinton designated 7 groups as qualifying for assistance under the Act. (see Note to 22 U.S.C. 2151 and 64 Fed. Reg. 67810). The groups were (1) The Iraqi National Accord, (2) The Iraqi National Congress, (3) The Islamic Movement of Iraqi Kurdistan, (4) The Kurdistan Democratic Party, (5) The Movement for Constitutional Monarchy, (6) The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and (7) The Supreme Council for The Islamic Revolution in Iraq. The Act authorized the President to assist all such groups with: broadcasting assistance (for radio and television broadcasting), military assistance (education and training of an army),and humanitarian assistance (for individuals fleeing Saddam Hussein). The Act specifically refused to grant the President authority to use U.S. Military force to achieve its stated goals and purposes, except as authorized under the Act in section 4(a)(2)) in carrying out this Act."

Spineless Dems and the pukes passed it. Then he signed it. There is a case for Dem/Clinton complicity.

Of course, as long as about 50,000+ Iraqis per year were being starved and bombed to death without publicity, cleanly, everything was okie-dokie. It took the bush crowd and their lust for the control of oil to dirty it up...

Then there were those of us who took the heat by opposing military action in Iraq since '90. It appears we were right all along.

when I try to envision how the war might end, I see some piece of legislation being key, passed with a veto-proof majority. This would mean that a number of republicans feel it's in their political interest to abandon Bush.

38. It IS in their political interest to abandon Bush ...
They have two choices: Stick with a highly unpopular president who is on his way out, and support a war that the majority of Americans want ended, OR risk not being re-elected as individuals, and as a party.

No matter how loyal people think GOP politicians are to their party, they are even MORE loyal to their own political careers and ambitions. If they see Bush (which they obviously now do) as a liability, they will throw him under the bus to save their own skins.

They've pretty much painted themselves into a corner -- and surprise, surprise! -- they did so without devising an exit strategy.
