Running for Cabinet positions?
Edited on Tue May-15-07 01:08 PM by NoPasaran
The view is often expressed on DU that one candidate or another would make an excellent choice for a position in someone else's cabinet, or that some presidential candidates who seemingly don't a chance of being nominated are really running for cabinet positions. However... how often do presidents bring their former rivals into their administrations? Lincoln, of course, is famous for doing so. Wilson named the oft-defeated William Jennings Bryan his Secretary of State. But I'm at a loss for other, more recent examples. Thoughts, anyone?

On edit: Vice president is another matter. Rivals are often chosen for the Number Two slot for one reason or another, and then frequently ignored for the next four to eight years.

2. VP is another matter
It's not uncommon for rivals to get the running mate slot.

3. Reagan chose Bush, Kerry chose Edwards... FDR and JFK chose rivals
Edited on Tue May-15-07 01:03 PM by wyldwolf
In JFK's case, he chose LBJ for VP and Adlai Stevenson for Ambassador to the United Nations. Srevenson was not an official nominee in 1960 but was the subject of a "draft" movement.

4. Not necessarily rivals, but both Clinton and Bush cabinet members from
the other party in their administration. Clinton had Cohen in Defence and bush had Mineta in Transportation.

6. As did Richard M Nixon
Who named John Connally (still a Dem at that point in time) Treasury Secretary.

Actually. I think that if we were to go through the lists of cabinet members we would find that including a member or two of the opposition party has not been that rare.

8. But had Bush run against Ford?
I remember Reagan challenging Ford in '76, but did GHWB?
