Hillary Clinton, the second choice of Gore supporters?
The two charts are based on Gallup's poll numbers

http://www.galluppoll.com/content/default.aspx?ci=27598&pg=2

5/13 5/6 4/15 4/5 3/25 3/4 2/11
Hillary Clinton 35 38 31 38 35 36 40
Barack Obama 26 23 26 19 22 22 21
Al Gore 16 14 15 14 17 18 14
John Edwards 12 12 16 15 14 9 13
Bill Richardson 2 2 3 2 3 1 4
Joe Biden 2 2 1 1 1 3 1
Al Sharpton 1 -- 2 * -- * --
Christopher Dodd 1 * 1 * -- * 1
Wesley Clark 1 1 1 3 1 2 1
Dennis Kucinich * 1 1 * * -- *
Mike Gravel -- * 1 1 -- 1 *

5/13 5/6 4/15 4/5 3/25 3/4 2/11
Hillary Clinton 42 45 37 43 42 44 48
Barack Obama 28 27 29 19 24 27 23

Joe Biden 2 2 2 2 2 3 2
Al Sharpton 1 * 2 * -- 1 --
Dennis Kucinich 1 1 1 * 1 * *
Wesley Clark 1 1 2 3 2 3 1
Christopher Dodd 1 * 1 * -- * 1
Mike Gravel -- * 1 1 * 1 *

Where they got the numbers without Gore

NOTE: Ballot recalculated by substituting Gore supporters' second choice for their Gore vote

Hillary's support increased by an average of almost 7% as Gore's supporters' 2nd choice.

Obama's support increased by an average of 2.5% as Gore's supporters' 2nd choice.

Edwards's support increased by an average of a little over 2% as Gore's supporters' 2nd choice.

Richardson's support increased by an average of 1% as Gore's supporters' 2nd choice.

No Opinion went up about 1% in the poll w/out Gore.

1. Not the second choice of this particular Gore supporter
Second Choice - Kucinich
Third Choice - Obama
Fourth Choice - Edwards.

I do, however, like HClinton better than Biden, for what it's worth.

17. Same here - Clinton would be my 4th choice
if that. 2nd would be either Edwards or Obama.

8. No.
Gore, Edwards, Obama, Clinton.
I will vote for any Dem who gets the nomination over any Repuke clown likely to get their nomination. I would prefer, however, not to be holding my nose when doing so and I would like some balance between electability (we saw how that worked out before) and risk-taking.

24. I don't know who they polled
but she's literally NO choice for this Gore supporter. The "yes" vote on the IWR was the death knell for ANY politician. She's gone downhill from there. WHEN she gets the nomination (it has been so deemed, as it was with Kerry in 2004), I'll be writing in Al's name.

25. All within the Margin of Error (with a single exception)
True, Clinton gets a statistically significant boost, but all the other figures are meaningless.

Personally, I think it's all still a matter of name recognition. There are probably a lot of people who have only heard of Clinton and Gore. So when Gore is taken away, they revert to Clinton.

27. It is still very early and name recognition is certainly a part of it.
But i thought it may be interesting to look at since Gallup is one of the few polls to both include Gore and ask for someone's 2nd choice.

28. Yes, it is interesting data
And I'm glad you posted it. I just don't think you can draw the any real conclusion from it.

One would think that people who support Gore would be looking for an alternative to the front runners, wouldn't you? Unless of course they don't really know anything much about the front-runners.

It's also kind of interesting that Gore got 16%, but when he isn't an option, Clinton gets only a 7% bump. Since one can be fairly certain anyone polled knows who she is and probably has a pretty well-formed opinion of her, that doesn't speak too well of her popularity, does it?

29. Response.
"One would think that people who support Gore would be looking for an alternative to the front runners, wouldn't you? Unless of course they don't really know anything much about the front-runners."

Its seems counter intuitive at this point I would agree.

Not necessarily, see your first point above. I was actually surprised by the results I would have expected a more even split between the big 3.
