Whitman was the top Bush administration official who announced in the days after 9/11 that the city's air was safe to breathe. She did so despite a huge pile of burning debris at Ground Zero, an unprecedented amount of toxic dust blanketing lower Manhattan, and a tiny number of test results completed by her staff. She and the White House then gave the all-clear for tens of thousands of workers and residents to return to nearby homes and office buildings.

Since then, we have learned that internal warnings from career health officials in several federal and local agencies about the dangers from massive amounts of toxic chemicals in the dust were ignored.

Thousands of former rescue workers, local residents and office employees are still suffering respiratory and other health effects, and some have died from what is today recognized as the biggest release of toxic chemicals ever recorded in an American city.

If he gets the nomination, you know the airwaves will be full of first responders and residents who believed him and Whitman when they assured them that the air was safe.

Sure, they gave them those cheap paper masks, but they restrict breathing. Also, if the air was deemed dangerous, businesses wouldn't have been able to open. If businesses couldn't open, more money would be lost.

What it came down to is money. So what if people protest, the government can deny, stonewall until they all die. No living "troublemakers" no problem.
