How Much Spin In Romney's Debate Performance?
Former Gov. Mitt Romney was at his presidential headquarters in Boston Wednesday night to spur a campaign fund-raising drive.

The night before, he regaled the crowd at a GOP presidential debate with his heroic exploits in the treacherous liberal jungles of Massachusetts.

How much of what Romney said was truth, and how much was spin?

"I've had to stand up for traditional marriage," Romney claimed.

True enough, Romney was a consistent gay-marriage opponent.

"I've had to stand up for life," he said.

Sure, once he had his alleged epiphany over stem cell research and started running for president. Before that, he defended abortion rights.

"In that very difficult state I stood to make sure that we get English immersion in our schools," he said at the debate.

Wednesday night, I told Romney, "The English immersion, that was an independent ballot campaign, independent of you."

"It was begun long before I got involved in the campaign," he replied. "I joined it …"

Sorry, governor. You're pushing it when you tout abortion and immersion as flagship battles of yours. Those go on the scorecard as half-truths.

Another claim: "I've fought for the death penalty; I've fought for abstinence education …"

"Would those be two cases where the battles you fought really didn't yield results?" I asked.

"Oh, there's no question," he answered.

And there's more spin than truth in those claims to fame.

If all this seems like nit-picking, consider that if Romney is elected, he could be confronted with an all-Democratic Congress, just like his Beacon Hill days.

If his ability to not just fight, but succeed in those circumstances, isn't relevant, than what is?
