There I said it.
I am quite frankly disgusted by all the people who are saying, "oh you can't talk trash on Falwell just after he died, that's DISRESPECTFUL and makes you classless and no better than he was" and all that great steaming load.
Jerry Falwell was a man who made his money at the expense of others, inciting hatred and the worst things in human nature to build a sick, twisted web of blood and ichor and power for his own glorification. He took what is supposed to be a creed about loving they neighbor, turning the other cheek and all that into the new Sturmbateilung inciting people to hate and made himself the judge and jury of entire swaths of society.
He was one of the men who, when the histories are written, will be remembered as one of the key inciters of the culture wars and bringing this country so close to potential civil war. He was one of the men who brought the Religious Right into the mainstream of politics, making it ok to hate people because they worship a different god or love someone that society says they can't or believe they were born in the wrong sex or believe there should be separation of church and state as well as secular, not theocratic government in the United States of America. He was a man who made his money by exploiting the faith of millions of people, living high on the hog off the social security money of countless people. He was a man who was unafraid to dance on the graves of thousands of Americans days after 9/11 to spread his message of hate. He justified all of this saying he spoke for God and if you disputed this you would burn in hell for eternity. He was a man who showed no respect for those he hated or for those who worshiped the ground he walked on.
He was a man who incited violence against all those he railed against. He has the blood of every dead abortion clinic worker and GLBT who were the victims of hate crimes inspired by his judgments and pronouncements. Every person who ever lost their job because their faith wasn't the right one he shares part of the blame. And on all of this he still put on a mask of godliness and goodness in spite of the evils that were committed at his behest, at his urging, at his desire. Not only was he vile, he was a base and shameless hypocrite in all of this, in all these urgings and decrees he still claimed to be a good man. The worst part is the hate he exploited and urged on will sadly survive him as his greatest and most famous progeny.
As far as I'm concerned, those who claim they are being "classy" by not speaking ill of a dead worm who in death has done more good in life by not being around to push his vile ideas into society any longer are either hypocrites or just as bad as he was.
And I believe this for one reason: to be able to be as two-faced as him, knowing what he did, and most likely feeling righteous anger for what he did, yet claiming to be "classy" by not saying what lies in your heart you lie to yourself and all those in your life. That makes you as big a liar as he, for you put on a pretty mask to hide what you truly feel because you are told it is "uncouth" to say what you feel about a man who inspired the worst in all he touched.
For those who genuinely are not disgusted and happy on some level that this man is dead, you are like the priest who looked the other way. You are the worst of the worst in my eyes, for you are the ones who allow evil to go on unchallenged when it happens. As was said by a great, wise man, "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing." To simply look the other way or try to excuse such a man for any reason and be genuine about doing so is someone who must be willing to ignore the evils committed and to silence your conscience even though it cries out against such evils.
I know I will get flamed for this. It would not surprise me if this thread is locked and deleted. But this is what I believe and I believe all this "piety" and "class" and "respect" is a mere facade so that those doing so can sit on their high horse and feel all important about themselves for a really petty, hypocritical, and false reason. You can claim to be so moral, setting such a high standard and all that garbage, but in doing so you lie to yourself and those around you at the very least or are as bad as he was at the very most. An honorable enemy in death deserves to have the glass raised to him in toast and be treated with respect. Slime like Falwell deserve a shallow grave with a canvas thrown over their face and nothing more with no respect or ceremony or pomp and circumstance and wailing and gnashing of teeth. To get respect one must earn respect, and Falwell deserves none as he earned none.
And if his ghost should come back to haunt me for speaking my mind and heart about him, I'll kick his ass around the block.
