Frist as Pres of World Bank:
a couple of the names being floated indicate that the administration has not learned its lessons from the Wolfowitz scandal, and plans to install a loyalist who will promote the administration’s agenda over sound bank policies:

Outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair: Bush yesterday called Blair a “courageous man” and said that he “enjoyed working with Tony Blair more than I could have possibly imagined.” Nobel prize-winner Joe Stiglitz, a former senior vice president at the World Bank, said, “He is one of the people that is clearly being discussed.’” Blair has been Bush’s strongest international ally and pushed the invasion of Iraq.

Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN): Frist presided over one of the most ineffective Senate sessions in history, part of the Do-Nothing 109th Congress. In December, USA Today blasted his Senate of “lowering the achievement bar” and failing at “its most basic job: approving all 11 annual spending bills that keep the government’s lights on.” Frist also falsely claimed in 2004 that HIV can be spread through tears and sweat.

AP also has a few other names that are under consideration, including Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN), former Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick, and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

2. Why does the Prez of WB have to be an American?
 Surely there are more qualified financial/international minds out there than the morons that float to the top of the local pot ?

13. It was explained to me that the US
contributes most of the money for the WB, so is allowed to pick the Pres of it. Also explained to me was that, because the US gives most of the $$, it has the main say in which third-world, developing countries get the loans, and so the US gets to meddle in those countries' governments' decisions....for example, for those governments to develop ties (economic and social) to the US...instead of China, for instance. Many RWers feel as if the US shouldn't participate in the WB at all, but that would effectively mean the demise of it. I think it was established after WWII to counter the spreading influence of the USSR into developing countries, and has morphed into a way for the US to control the potential for resource development in those countries, along with their social agendas.

17. So then it really isn't the WORLD Bank, but more like the
U.S.-to-tell-the-world-what-to-do Bank ...

3. I'm sure Bush will miss Blair. He must give the best BJ's when he's in town.
Hey, Bush, how about Rick Santorum? Tom DeLay?

Too bad Cunningham and Ney are in prison, you could use them at the World Bank.

Senator Lugar would probably be the least toxic, and that is why he will not be appointed.

6. Does this mean Gonzo is off the list?
'Cause I was hearing that yesterday...or was that just idle chatter?

Because that's not funny. That's not even something to be joking about.

9. Put your money on Volcker
Edited on Fri May-18-07 10:31 AM by Lobster Martini
AP added Volcker to its list. I'd had other thoughts, but for now, that seems like a good bet.

Among those mentioned as a possible replacement for Wolfowitz were former Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick, who was Bush's former trade chief; Robert Kimmitt, the No. 2 at the Treasury Department; Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson; former Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa; Sen. Richard Lugar (news, bio, voting record), R-Ind.,; Stanley Fischer, who once worked at the International Monetary Fund and is now with the Bank of Israel; and former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker.

Going with Volcker for the time being.

Of course, I'm also betting against Street Sense at the Preakness, so my judgement is questionable.

14. Why Volcker?
Is he a social conservative, as well as a financial one?

for a job soon. Of course, if they want someone less qualified, there's always Brownie in a pinch.
