Should Al Gore RUN! "Time Mag" Poll...and includes an Interactive Map
to let you know how many people voted in YOUR STATE! BTW! Go to the site and Look for the Poll in the MIDDLE of the PAGE! (the site wouldn't let me do an individual link here to post on DU).

Remember...go Look for the AL GORE POLL in the "Middle of the Page!"

3. after you've voted
there is a new button that appears. Make sure that pop-ups are enabled in your browser, and click that new button. The map application will pop up, and you hover your mouse over the various states to see what the current total is. It's able to tell what state you're from by your computers IP address I believe.

"IT" knows everything. My web site stats program tells what kind of computer and browser you're using, even what size monitor you're viewing on and how many colors you have it set to. Finding out what state you're from is the easiest! Your IP address tags you.

13. Your stats program is fudging
There is no way your stats could know reliably what size monitor/color settings your visitors are using.

Common misconceptions: websites can track your browsing history (they can see only the last site you visited), they can track your path through their site (with cookies they can do this somewhat), they can know how long you spent at their site.

This is the list of variables sent in an HTTP request, and it is easily hacked:

14. I want my money back!
How does it "fudge" it? It gives me a column for resolution and color depth, in addition to the other stats you mentioned (visitor path, last site visited, duration of visit, etc). Seriously, I'm not claiming any sort of expertise here, just reporting the info it gives me...what method would it use to make up that kind of info? Just curious.

17. I really don't know
They can get the OS version/browser (usually), so maybe they have some extrapolation off of that. Not very helpful.

If the visitor has cookies enabled they can get a pretty good idea of the path taken. But if your visitor shuts down his/her browser for the night it would look to the server like someone spent 12 hours on the last page. The only time a browser communicates with the server (typically) is when there is a page load.

What program is it?

It's free for a basic version, but I paid extra for a subscription that gives more info.

22. Several of the "cool" features are just eye candy
But still nice. For instance, it has a Google Maps-like feature that places a pin on a world map indicating every location which has accessed the site, with a roll-over featuring all the stats for that hit. It gets ridiculously unwieldy with heavy traffic, but it's still cool to look at sometimes. Also, when you drill down a specific hit, it includes a map along with all the pertinent info. Personally I like the "View by Country" list, which includes the flags of each country which visited. Again, it's basically useless eye candy, but it's kinda cool to see a graphic representation of all your visitors. It makes me feel so international! LOL!

It also offers a nice "Battle of the Search Engines" feature which breaks down keywords and tells you which search engine is directing how much traffic via specific search terms.

Put it this way, I looked at a lot of 'em, and it was the first one I found that I felt was actually worth paying extra money for!

25. Whoa nelly, you've got to clarify one point!
When you said that a website can "see only the last site you visited" -- you should clarify that this ONLY applies if it was a link that led to the new page. For sites opened from bookmarks, or from copied/pasted URLs, no such tracking is possible. In other words, the site can capture the "Referrer" or the URL of the page that has a link to it's page.

Just want to make sure the myth is understood properly.

and it's not looking good for Mt. States.....

Get out there and vote. They probably PROGRAM THEIR COVERAGE according to this "concealed poll."

12. According to a "close aide"
There's about a 10% chance that Gore will get into the race this fall, presumably after the Nobel Peace Prize announcement in Oct. (So said Jonathan Alter of Newsweek to Keith Olbermann a few minutes ago).

24. Polls on the Internet mean nothing
especially when they are freeped or DUed. Even though, too bad the question wasn't are you changing your lifestyle to help Al Gore in his environmental work. I would love to see the response to that.

26. Agree..but this one is interesting in that it shows the State you voted from...
..so I must have spyware or cookies...but somehow they are monitoring the votes from each state and that's what make it an interesting poll if you vote and "click" on their map.

NC ..where I am must have alot of Gore Supporters who were looking for the article about him and went to the Time Site to find the poll.

This is very different from the AOL/CNN/MSNBC polls we here on DU try to "Anti-Freep." This one requires you to go looking for the Gore article or be a Gore supporter to answer the poll. The "SKEW" is obvious...but quirky.

What's the name of the poll?
