POTSDAM, Germany (AFP) - G8 ministers left the United States a
free hand in choosing a successor to Paul Wolfowitz as head of the
World Bank Saturday, as Washington made clear it saw no reason
why the bank should not continue to be run by an American.
In an apparent move to defuse potential transatlantic friction on
the matter, Group of Eight finance ministers signalled during a
two-day meeting here that they would not challenge a tradition
whereby the United States appoints an American citizen as the
bank's president.
In return, Europe traditionally names the head of the bank's sister
organisation, the International Monetary Fund.
US Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt told a press briefing
after the meeting that while Washington was willing to listen to
other opinions on the matter, it saw no reason to modify current
practice.
