A Legal Immigrant Taxi Cab Drive Told Me That Bush's Immigration Policy Is.......
making living so bad in American that immigrants won't want to come here anymore.

You know - there may be some logic to his thinking.

He was from Lithuania.

He said he lived in a facist state and that things are becoming to reminiscent here now.

He said he is scared for us.

1. Was His English Marginal ?
I have heard this sentiment from other recent migrants but they typicaly are refering to a multitude of policies and not just immigration. The combination of the policies is toxic. Sometimes you have to work with people with limited english to get the needed info from them.

5. Which fascist state did he live in?
I can't imagine that he remembers living under the Nazis during WWII.

Is he refering to the Soviet Union? Lithuania gained independence in the early 90s and is a democracy and member of the EU now. I was there in '95 and no one I talked to said anything about fascism. They were all trying to set up a democracy from scratch.

6. I live in the D.C. area. My housemates are from Turkey, Peru and Canada.
My landlord's parents are from Peru. None of them like the U.S. very much, although the Canadian liked the university town that she previously lived in better than D.C.

None of them particularly like the place. Ms. Turkey hates Jews and African-Americans. Ms. Canada thinks that the D.C. African Americans are hostile. Landlord Peru hates Bush and the U.S., but uses his hatred to refuse to follow local laws. He may depart for Argentina. Roommate Peru seems the most satisfied.

I recently moved back here after several years in a smaller city. The congestion and housing prices have gone through the roof. There are many more Spanish speakers, but my Spanish is rusty and I really don't have the kind of schedule that lends itself to regular lessons. It's too bad that so many interesting jobs can be found here. Otherwise, I'd be gone myself.

2. That's the point. When our lives are miserable and poverty stricken its
GREAT for the upper 5% of the population.

3. I've been thinking this for a while....
We can't make life better in other countries as an incentive for them to stay home. So if we make America a less desirable place to live, maybe they'll stop coming.

7. Well, see my post above.
We receive few immigrants from other developed countries, and lots of people elsewhere hate us because of Bush. My Turkish roommate says that this is a hard country to live in. She is thinking of moving to Belgium to do a post-doc. My Canadian roommate is thinking of an intensive French course so that she can work in Ottawa, where everyone who works for the government, and thus in NGOs, must be bilingual. Her lack of French language skills is one reason that she wants to stay in the U.S. I've told her that she might want to pick up Spanish if she wants to stay here.
