Politics: His New Role
It's another first: the spouse of an ex-president running for the White House. What role is he playing, and what would he do as, yes, 'First Gentleman'?
By Jonathan Darman
Newsweek
May 28, 2007 issue - "Man, I like that stuff," Bill Clinton said. "I shouldn't eat it, but I like it." It was Sunday, March 4. On a private plane headed south from New York, the former leader of the free world was staring hard at a fully stocked bowl of food. A recovering snack-addict since his quadruple-bypass surgery in 2004, Clinton was thinking about falling off the wagon with a few bags of Fritos and some granola bars. No one on the plane was going to stop him—certainly not Malcolm Smith. The Democratic minority leader of New York's state Senate, Smith was just happy to be along for the ride. "He sat right in front of me," Smith later gushed to a NEWSWEEK reporter. "We shared the food."

3. Sexist bullshit.
Look at her resume. Take away Bill, and she's still the most experienced of the top three. Back when Bill first ran, the argument was "Without his wife, he'd have been nothing." The conservatives tried to saddle him with her because she was the extreme liberal of the pair. Now the same sexist crap is being spun the other way. (Read this is in a whiny-baby voice) "Hillary hasn't earned anything she's done. She owes everything to her husband. Without him, she'd be nothing." Despite the fact that every stage of her life, from before she met Bill until now, screams otherwise. She's become a leader in just about everything she's been involved in, from high school on. She was working in leadership positions in the federal government while Bill was still spinning yarns in Arkansas.

It's sick that you by this newest Republican bullshit. Just goddamned sick.

4. I did not say she is not qualified....I simply meant had Bill not been President....
Her popularity would not have been adequate to even be considered.

7. Prove it. She may have been president already.
And without her, who knows? Maybe Bill would have never been elected governor, much less president.

You can't reconstruct things. She's an elected senator. She used her popularity to get considered, then used her own abilities to win the job, twice, and perform it. Like Ted Kennedy. Like Robert Kennedy.

This will be the Republican strategy against her. They can't smear her personally any more than they've done--people just won't listen anymore. So that's how they'll smear her. "She's only popular because her husband was Bill. She'd never be here on her own." We should be slamming that sexist crap, not pushing it here.

5. Nice little "when did you stop beating your wife?" poll they got going there.
No option for "She'll make her own decisions, and Bill Clinton will be only one of her many sources of advice." Let's plant the assumption that Bill will always be guiding Hillary's hand, because she's just a wife and wives never do anything independent of their husbands.

8. Helps and hurts
Bill helps because he is a likeable charasmatic guy who looks like one of the greatest Presidents ever thanks in part to his utterly incompetent successor.

He hurts because he's been President and the ping-ponging of the Presidency between Bushes and Clintons will bother many.
