Obama win in straw poll (MD) surprises some
Straw poll surprises with total by Obama
May 20, 2007

Barack Obama narrowly edged out fellow U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards in an unscientific, but interesting, presidential straw poll of some of Howard County's most dedicated Democrats.

The poll was done at the party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner Thursday night at Clarksville's Ten Oaks Ballroom, with Clinton supporter (and straw voter) Gov. Martin O'Malley the main speaker.

The results surprised some of the more than 300 people attending.

Obama got 65 votes to Clinton's 61, and former Senator Edwards got 56 votes. Next highest was New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson with 12 votes, former Vice President Al Gore with 6, Sen. Joseph R. Biden with 4, and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich got 1.

4. Hillary crashing in Iowa
Hillary Clinton's campaign is running into trouble -- potentially very serious trouble -- in Iowa.

The latest and best poll of likely Democratic caucus goers in the first state that will weigh in on the 2008 nomination race has Clinton falling to third place. And that's not the worst of it. As Clinton stumbles, a new contender with potential to eat into her base it rising rapidly.

The Des Moines Register survey has former North Carolina Senator John Edwards solidly in first. Edwards, who ran second in the 2004 Iowa caucuses and has worked hard to maintain his organization in the state, is at 29 percent. That's about where he has been for some time in Iowa, where caucus goers will do much to define the direction of the 2008 race as it hist full speed next January.

In second place is Illinois Senator Barack Obama ☼ with 23 percent.

Clinton musters a mere 21 percent -- down significantly from her position in several previous polls -- to secure the No. 3 position.

7. One poll had her in first place in Iowa this week; another had her in thrid
so I don't think she's in serious trouble just yet. Actually, in some polls a couple of months ago, she was running fourth in Iowa.

12. KCCI might want to guess again?

Since they have a poll with Edwards leading on the same page as their exclusive KCCI poll. lol

Clinton has little Iowa support other than a legion of staffers.

15. Take it up with KCCI then. lol
I live here in Iowa. Clinton support is almost non existent. It's all Edwards + Obama with a smattering of Biden support from the female AARP crowd.

Not a single central committee member has stepped forward to back Hillary at this point. Her staffer is one of my faves though. :)
