White House hits back at Carter

CRAWFORD, Texas — In a biting rebuke, the White House on Sunday dismissed former President Jimmy Carter as "increasingly irrelevant" after his harsh criticism of President Bush.

Carter was quoted Saturday as saying "I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history."

The Georgia Democrat said Bush had overseen an "overt reversal of America's basic values" as expressed by previous administrations, including that of his own farther, former President George H.W. Bush.

"I think it's sad that President Carter's reckless personal criticism is out there," White House spokesman Tony Fratto responded Sunday from Crawford, where Bush spent the weekend.

"I think it's unfortunate," Fratto said. "And I think he is proving to be increasingly irrelevant with these kinds of comments."

It just pisses me off that the only answer they have to anything is to bitterly attack anyone who dares disagree with them or tell the truth. Everything Carter said is true, do they think by their "irrelevant" response we are all going to forget the mess they have us in? Great for Jimmy Carter, we need more like him who are not afraid to speak the truth and hold this administration accountable for its constant blunders!!

2. I just saw this and came directly to DU!
OMG! HELLO, Tony Fratto! The King has no clothes! And calling an 82 yr-old man "increasingly irrelvant" will not change that fact!

3. Carter's place in history is secure. Carter said he would never lie to us. Bush lied.
It used to be said that presidents in their second terms became more statesman like because they were concerned with how history will judge them.

We know how history will judge Bush: The worst President in the modern age.

Was he worse than James Buchanan, who did nothing as the country slid into civil war?

History will judge and it is hard to answer since we still have more than a year and a half of the shrub to live through.

4. Bush isn't "increasingly irrelevant". He started completely irrelevant and continues
to be so. Just an odd thing that someone so irrelevant can be so malevolant. Neither Bush, Cheney, any of the misadministration (including Mr. Flatus...er, Fratto) are worthy to even empty Jimmy Carter's garbage.

5. I've always loved Carter. A fine human being and a REAL Christian...as opposed..
to the modern-day Pharisee now below ground...

...
Falwell a few weeks ago......was defending the moral turpitude of people like Newt Gingrich with platitudes like "we're not electing a Sunday School teacher here..." and the interviewer said "Well, we did at one time.....Jimmy Carter." to which Falwell replied, "Yes, and he was the worst president in 40 years."

Who's still standing.....by the grace of God, let's presume?
