Obama raises at least $750,000 in Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Illinois Sen. Barack Obama picked up at least $750,000 for his Democratic presidential campaign from two fundraisers in this wealthy town over the weekend.

About 300 people turned out Saturday at a reception at the waterfront home of hedge fund billionaire Paul Tudor Jones II. Fellow billionaire investor George Soros and celebrity Tyra Banks were among the attendees at the $2,300-per-person fundraiser.

Former New York Knicks player Allan Houston hosted another event for Obama later Saturday at his Greenwich home that drew about 150 people, who paid $1,000 to $2,300, the maximum individual donation allowed to primary candidates' campaigns.

Total fundraising amounts for the Greenwich events were not available from Obama's campaign.

Obama gave a speech at Houston's home on needed improvements to education and social justice. He also criticized the war in Iraq.

Houston, now a basketball analyst for ESPN, said he was excited at the possibility of Obama becoming the country's first black president.

"This, to me, was a historic moment," Houston said. "It's kind of overwhelming, and now he's at your home. It's a blessing."

At Jones' home, waiters in white tuxedos lined the front lawn before the event.

Forbes magazine estimates Jones' worth at $2.5 billion, ranking the philanthropic founder of Tudor Investment Corp. 369th on the list of the world's richest people this year.

Jones has also given generously to Obama rival Hillary Rodham Clinton and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Republican. His event on Saturday included a VIP reception for supporters who have raised at least $25,000 for Obama, the invitation said.

So, is Obama fading? :sarcasm:

10. It is indeed good news for Obama - I am not for or against Obama or any of our
candidates - although I do get very annoyed at Hillary bashing and if I feel energetic I will post the facts that show that she has little or no black marks against her relative to her progressive views - voting at a 85% progressive level by the org's that track that stuff, and having a lifetime of achievements/work for the progressive/liberal and women and child issues that we all care about.

At this point I am happy with any of the candidates for the general - and for the primary I am still looking to learn their specific detailed proposals - something Obama has not given us to date as his positions are almost wholly platitudes (the only one with some detail is on energy where he includes converting coal to oil - not one of my favorite ideas) - but indeed he always has the right thoughts expressed very well, even as they are without detail, thereby leaving enough room for at least some of those listening to fear just what "bi-partisan" and "all options on the table" really mean to him. But Hillary while a bit more detailed than Obama and appearing to be more liberal progressive on issues still needs to flesh out her ideas with more specifics so as to catch up to Richardson's energy proposal and Edwards' Health care proposal (DK has great detailed proposals - but polls at 1%).

Polls mean little 9 months before the first primary votes except relative to helping in the contribution gathering - and Obama is doing fine - better than any other candidate - in that regard at this point.

The 2% behind in NH should be worth a few more dollars of contributions to Obama over the next few weeks! :-)

3. Obama may be the best candidate we have
I don't know. Myself I just don't see what he has done to even be considered a contender for President. I have heard he made a great speech at the Convention, I never heard it. How long has he been a Senator 2 years and just what has he done? Any of the other candidates have more experience than he has and I just don't see why he is so high in the polls, are the others that bad?

4. Do some research on him
Check his Senate page, his campaign website, read his book, look on YouTube some of his speeches.

5. I would think...
...you would at least be curious enough to listen to his speech at the convention. How can you question what he has done, or whether he is a good candidate, if you haven't even taken the time to pay attention in any way. He has two books out, he makes speeches every day that you can listen to online. Unless you are interested enough to want to be an informed voter, why would you even want to vote?

6. I am just saying I know all the other candidates
and their views on the issues and I can see any one of them being considered a contender for the Presidency. I don't need to go out and research their record they are all well known, I haven't seen anything about Obama other than a 5 second sound bite from time to time he just seems like a creation of the News Media as an alternative to Clinton.

9. If you are not willing to find out what Obama is all about
then your criticism of him is invalid and baseless.

You have a real opportunity to fill someone in on the strengths of your favored candidate and instead you insult this person.

Don't you see the futility in that?

He was being honest with you and not attacking Obama, many people feel the same way and this is something that Obama will have to counter in order to win votes.

People will not spend time researching a candidate if they are not excited about them. It's up to you to convince people why they should. Insulting them will just drive them further away.

Have you spent time researching all the other candidates, I think not.....

If you want people to listen, provide some useful info, it works better than insults......try it......
