Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on Democratic Budget Plan
For the first time in six years, we have a budget proposal that sets a course for a balanced budget without sacrificing health care, education or public safety – and without raising taxes on working families. It represents a first step in fixing the mess created by the careless policies and wrong choices of George Bush and the Republican Congress.
It hasn’t taken long for the Republican chorus to start their political complaining. We don’t need lectures about fiscal responsibility from the people who ran up the biggest deficits in our country’s history. We don’t need any more Republican tax cuts for the wealthy or cuts in the vital services that keep our families safe and make our communities strong. Democrats were elected to change the direction of this country, and that’s what they’re doing with this budget proposal.
I'm a proud AFSCME member!
