Are we still in Kansas?
Letter published in Newsweek:

Debating Crossing Party Lines

Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of the late President Dwight Eisenhower, says "it's a buyer's market" for the votes of reasonable Republicans disaffected with their party ("Generational Tensions," May 14). Eisenhower challenges Democrats: "Make my day." In her grandfather's home state of Kansas, Democrats have cut more than $1 billion in wasteful spending, reinvesting in public education, without resorting to tax increases. They are promoting domestic energy security through development of renewable fuels and supporting our National Guard members and their families with a "Military Bill of Rights." Carrying that record into the 2006 elections, Kansas Democrats inspired a respected district attorney to leave the Republican Party and run for attorney general as a Democrat; Paul Morrison won handily, defeating a divisive Republican incumbent. And I was re-elected to a second term as governor—with Mark Parkinson, a former chairman of the Kansas Republican Party, as my running mate. In Kansas, voter registration favors Republicans nearly 2 to 1. Yet Democrats are attracting Republican votes with a pragmatic style of leadership focused on the right priorities. So, to President Eisenhower's granddaughter, and other Republicans losing patience with their party's drift, I say: "Welcome to a Democratic Party of responsible government and real results."
Kathleen Sebelius
Governor of Kansas
Topeka, Kans.

4. Kathleen Sebelius is great
Who'da thunk it? A smart Democratic woman is governor of Kansas, of all places. She makes me proud to live here. :patriot:

2. We need more candidates like Webb, Dorgan, and Tester
These candidates represent the real base of the Democratic Party: laborers. Hopefully, other Democrats will be tolerant towards such candidates, who often are somewhat conservative on social issues. Or maybe if the GOP nominates Giuliani, social issues will be off the table.

5. Thanks, LBJ for your comments
Yes, it would be nice if social issues will be off the table. At least, not as the sole criteria by which to measure a politicians.

And, welcome to DU

3. I think we....
....could be charging a much higher price to those who are longing for a return to honest, clean, responsible government....

....accepting a new social order and tax increases on the wealthy should be the minimum price of admission....everybody knows there is no other game in town and with progressive/grass-roots control of the Party we could charge a fair price for our politics rather than giving it away to appease the corporate interests....
