At what point do these so-called conservatives out there plan to speak up against this crap?

From CNet, then my analysis:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is pressing the U.S. Congress to enact a sweeping intellectual-property bill that would increase criminal penalties for copyright infringement, including "attempts" to commit piracy.... The Bush administration is throwing its support behind a proposal called the Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2007, which is likely to receive the enthusiastic support of the movie and music industries, and would represent the most dramatic rewrite of copyright law since a 2005 measure dealing with prerelease piracy....

The IPPA would, for instance:

........

* Permit more wiretaps for piracy investigations. Wiretaps would be authorized for investigations of Americans who are "attempting" to infringe copyrights....

* Allow computers to be seized more readily. Specifically, property such as a PC "intended to be used in any manner" to commit a copyright crime would be subject to forfeiture, including civil asset forfeiture....

* Require Homeland Security to alert the Recording Industry Association of America. That would happen when CDs with "unauthorized fixations of the sounds, or sounds and images, of a live musical performance" are attempted to be imported.

Oh where to begin?

2. It is almost funny....almost....
how they say something like "the most dramatic rewrite of copyright law since a 2005 measure dealing with prerelease piracy...." as if this issue hasn't been addressed in 150 years or so.

3. You forgot the best part - LIFE IN PRISON
You could face life in the slammer if your use of counterfeit material "recklessly causes or attempts to cause death."

6. They will Copyright the Constitution and not allow the reprinting of it under penalty of this new ..
LAW, then write their (acceptable) version of it making the original breaking the law.

Think about it- If they want to create a new LAW, it's automatically NOT in our best interests. But it is in theirs.

To be fair, something has to be done with piracy,
And they do arrest you for "attempted" murder.

But this is not the direction we should go in.

8. Well, perhaps the affected parties need to come up with a better business model
One that would discourage piracy instead of promoting it. CDs have always been outrageously priced, and music download sites are also. So rather than charging an arm and a leg for a CD they could drop the price a little and make it such that there is no need to pirate music.

It would also help if retail outlets would carry a wider array of music. We used to have a good independent record store here, one that carried a wide variety of music. When the owner decided to sell out and retire, this store became part of the Sam Goody's chain, and the selection became the same ol' shit you find almost everywhere else, and their service sucks.

The recording industry likes to play like this is a new thing, but no matter what the medium, you're still going to have a certain amount of people who are going to reproducing music. Back in the day it was people who made tapes, now it is people doing downloads and burning CDs. This sort of activity didn't used to raise the ire of the recording industry, but now out of sheer corporate greed these corporporations are now into busting teenagers for making a mix:shrug: Seems rather pointless to me.

9. This idiot is up over his head in alligators
and all he can do is pull this bullshit attempt at intellectual-property legislation out of his vacuous ass to convince Congress and the American people that he is doing his job.

It's not even in his job description to suggest bills to Congress ... his job is to enforce those bills passed by Congress.

What an ultra maroon!!
