Will conservatives pick lettuce and clean motel rooms? |
|
Here in Mississippi (lowest per capita income in the nation) I've been asking folks who support getting rid of all them immigrants if they will bitch moan and bellyache when they can't get lettuce in the grocery store. By gawd thats nonsense, it'll continue to get picked. Then I ask how are we gonna deport 12 million people and how much will it cost and is there a guarantee they won't come back. By gawd we just need to get rid of them. Mississippi, proud supporter of george bush and the state where ron raygun (murderer of priests, nuns and children) kicked off his presidential campaign.

Or how they went on a vacation with their church group and the motel rooms were so messy and dirty. Praise the lord and build that wall. Somehwere in leviticus it says that the U. Executive salary worldwide probably runs over 400 million a year before a single hourly employee is paid, yet you can still get mac and cheese 3 for a dollar on sale.

You'd think with all the labor cost cutting done over the last 20 years that they'd be able to bring that mac 'n cheese down to 6 for a dollar. But no. Dividends and shares and CEO salaries go up and up, labor goes down and down. Do you not see a connection there?

|
For production type jobs. People think that is a bunch, but people made more with bonus incentives in the 1970s. Point being, when they cut it down to less than minimum wage, (what most field workers actually make) all they will have there is immigrant labor.
I agree that they do try to gut the working man every chance they get though.

The problem is workers in the 70's bought into the labor scare and still haven't recovered. Now they're attacking the immigrants instead of joining with the immigrant and fighting the employer. The employer will screw the worker no matter who the worker is. Labor is a figure on a balance sheet, not human life. Workers have got to get that in their head and start fighting for their share again, no matter where that worker is located in the world. This is just more divide and conquer bullshit, just like they've done with union and scab forever.

|
I am really damned tired of arrogant assholes who believe white people don't do these jobs. Picking lettuce, no. But construction, roofing, landscaping, maids, nannies, etc - these are done by regular every day Americans all the time. They might be able to demand a living wage if they didn't have to compete with illegals, that part is absolutely TRUE.
Every time a Democrat says "jobs Americans won't do", they lose voters.

I don't care who is doing what job where. I don't even care if they're legal or illegal. People are doing jobs and what they need is to be able to organize and fight for a living wage. It doesn't matter who gets paid crap wages, they're going to need all the same social services. It's a stupid argument. I just think "jobs Americans won't do" is disrespectful to all the citizens who get up and do those jobs every single day, and it's goddamned arrogant to disrespect the work too.

And have you ever noticed how 'god awful' service in restaurants really is when you have a teeny-bopper or college kid as your server? You'll be happy to know that most will only do that job for an average of 3 weeks before they quit.
You'd do better to check out how many apply for Tyson's chicken plants in Arkansas, since you're into race.

I baled straw last summer for $8 an hour and ran the mow by myself while two high schoolers fed the elevator. I'm nearly forty BTW. If farm workers were paid $10 an hour there would be a waiting list.

My junior and senior year in high school (71-72) me and my buddy and my 51 Chevy pickup bucked hay and stacked it in barns for a nickel a bale. That would be 400 bales for 8 bucks divided by two plus the wear and tear on my ole pickemup truck, so top that.
Who would be in that waiting list? Ya mean if there were a higher wage, non-immigrants would be attracted to such employment? I wonder if that extra cost would be passed on to the consumer?

Try to stay in the here and now. $8 bucks an hour for some hot back breaking work, that I actually love to do.
Yes non immigrants would be on the waiting list, and no, it's not a given that all of the cost would be passed on to the consumer. The cost would be cut from the fat of shareholder profit and executive salary if they wanted to compete. See the Kraft example above for any more questions you may have.
Not every Wall Street talking point is actually based in reality.

That's not back breaking. Why way back when I drove the tractor it wasn't. And you are right, some of those executive bonuses have been slashed to the tens of millions. And its a fact in the library of congress, the only reason business' exist is to cut shareholder profit and wack away at executive salaries. Why I think I'll drive down to New Orleans or Biloxi tomorrow and watch all those lazy Mexicans work their asses off rebuilding the coast then read the letters to the editor insisting they all be "rounded up" and shipped out. Then what? Oh I know, the flag wavers will roll up their sleeves and finish the job. Why would I even think otherwise?

that's funny. Why should I respond to something irrrelevant to my argument? Conservatives hate immigrants. They want to "round" them up and get rid of them. (I guess we just snap our fingers for that to happen.) Those who hate irrationally don't think things through, they just whine about the unforseen consequences of their wishes and find another group to hate.

|
Australia has very limited migration, and the immigration they have is mainly highly educated/skilled migration. Yet I'm not aware of any crisis of unmade hotel beds or unharvested crops in Australia- they are one of the largest agricultural exporting countries in the world.
I favor some sort of pragmatic comprehensive immigration solution because deportation is unrealistic. But I disagree with the notion that we can't do our own work.

Let me jump right in here. You said they have limited migration. Maybe that would mean that the locals had to do the work themselves, no one doing it for less money spoiling the locals. I think we can do our own work too, but we won't for what we are paying immigrants and we must not whine and cry when prices go up (as I have implied bush supporters would.)

And as far as cleaning motel rooms, why don't kids in college take those jobs? Or jobs working in a cafeteria etc. Those jobs seem to be flexible and they should have time to study. Imo,those type of jobs a lot of Americans turn their nose up at them because they don't want to do them. They think it's beneath them. I hate to say it but it's true. And I guarantee you if there is some kind of depression, they would gladly do those jobs for payment.

All my kids did them. Most kids in town did them. Many still do them, it's how they support their families. See thread above "Here. Look." Cardinal handles about 1/3 of the employment in my town. I/d say 3/4 of the jobs pay wages just like that. And the median rent is $600, median home price $200,000. People better get a clue how it is for nearly half the country.

First year as a computer programmer I took a night job -- didn't realize how expense Chicago would be -- as a dishwasher in a wealthy suburb. All the other dishwashers, bus boys and wait staff were local high school kids. For these kids this was a temporary job they didn't want but were forced by daddy to take. And it showed in their work. They were horrible.
Noticing what a difference a decent worker made in the dish room, the managers asked my advice on how to fix the other areas. I had seen quite a few adults asking for job apps while I was there and suggested they start hiring grown ups. I can't tell you how much better that place started to run.
