How many people here on DU have run for office... |
|
I mean seriously, giving up a year or two or ten of their lives to try and make a difference...
Actually went out and tried to raise money, lots of money because they just won't take you seriously unless you have the bucks behind you...
How many have traveled around night after night, week after week, month after month, meeting room full after room full of interested people but meeting many more asking one simple question; what are you gonna do for me....
How many have invested tens of thousands of their own money to try and make a difference...
How many have sacrificed careers in order to try and make a difference...
I just wanna know...

1. I gotta admit, I was that dumb. |
|
Congress in 2004. Had to leave a flyer on my table, so my wife could remember what I look like. Fast food. Rubber chickens.
But, I met some of the greatest and nicest people in the world.

It does take over your life doesn't it...
I know it sounds like I am cynical at times, but I have been through the wringer and yet I am still hopefull and will always support a candidate that I truly believe in...

5. Like George Clooney... |
|
I've had too much sex to run. :)
Seriously though, the money is such a problem that most citizens can't even consider it ~ so we end up with career politicians who are always looking toward the next election instead of voting their conscience.

6. I have seen that first hand... |
|
I raised a fair amount of money but it was never enough to off set what the Republican guy had...
And then when I won the primary, the caucus wouldn't even answer my phone calls...

8. Well, I sure give you credit for trying!!! |
|
It's easy to see why so many people think the system is too corrupt to bother.
I've always volunteered for Dem candidates, but this time I'm involved with a get-out-the-vote campaign. After days like today, I wonder why I bother ~ anyway, we have some cool stuff:

7. Well...I ran for Precinct Vice Chair in 2004 and served for two years......... |
|
and worked for Kerry. But, it wasn't hard to do...since no one had organized Precincts in NC in maybe 80 years in NC. It was Howard Dean that inspired me and I was so angry about the 2000 Selection that I had to do something for '04.
I wasn't inspired to run for a higher office after '04, though. Do still try to keep active in our local politics attending functions and donating to the "Progressive Dems." I'm not fond of the Dem Party Establishment (DLC) after my experience with them, honestly.

11. I joined the DLC back in 1993... |
|
I am an accountant and thought they would be able to meld progressive programs with accounting like discipline...
I left the DLC in 1995...
