There are two types of Anti-War candidates |
|
There are those that don't like WAR and their are those that don't like THIS WAR. The difference isn't exactly subtle and tells you a whole lot about whats in their minds. (lets forget the subset of the second group, the ones that dont like THIS WAR at THIS TIME)

4. Straight Pacifism, Sir, Will Always Be A Distinctly Minority Position |
|
Never comprising more than a very small percentage of the populace or their represenatatives in Congress.
It will always be wholly absent from the Executive.

8. Who mentioned pacifism? |

You don't have to be a pacifist to dislike war. Many people live their lives in such a way that violence, of which war is the most extreme example, is only considered as the ABSOLUTE last possible option. That wouldn't make one a pacifist, but instead would make one a peaceable person. However if threats and coercion are routinely used even if it shouldn't lead to actual violence well ..... I think Jimmy Carter was such a peaceable person, wouldn't you think?

11. It Is True, Sir, That One May Dislike Violence But Be Willing to Employ It At Need |
|
And that is not pacifism.
But that weakens the distinction you are setting up between between people who dislike war and people who dislike this war, for on the ground you have now stated, these are not differences in kind, but only of judgement in this particular instance. Most of the people who dislike this war are probably people who have no particular affection for war in general either, and even some people who support this war still may, however mistakenly, feel it a necessary fight, and harbor no particular affection for war in general.

6. Actually that subset is problematic to me...... |
|
you know, the anti-war candidates that used to be for THIS WAR, but now they are against THIS SAME WAR. Because the fact be told, there are more of those running than any of the others!

7. Both parties support an Internationalist approch to |

to Foreign Policy. Therefore, you will find it difficult to find Pacifists among our Senators or House Members.
Democrats support a strong defense.

Those that say they don't like the war but continue to vote for it should be a group.

12. anyone who likes war is insane.. |
|
anyone who likes this war is incoherent and insane.
anyone who has an exit strategy is an electable peace candidate. anyone who thinks war will never happen is an unelectable peace candidate. anyone who clings to the fantasy that we must remain in Iraq indefinitely will be defeated in 2008.

14. Depends what you mean by "like". |
|
There have been many situations where starting a war was the least worst alternative - I think that the Kosovo war was the right decision, for example.
I wouldn't say that I liked the fact that huge numbers of people got killed in it, but I disliked it less than any of the other alternatives.
Sadly, I do not share your confidence that the victor in 2008 will oppose indefinate US occupation of Iraq - I think it more likely than not that they will, but far from a certainty.

There is a third group - they like any war, and they like this war. What they don't like is losing a war. When it looks like the war is being lost, they turn anti-war all of a sudden. I'd venture to say this is a sizeable bunch.
